For the better part of two decades, I’ve been a normal working lad in the trenches of development, data, and digital systems. No glossy founder myth. No buzzword circus. Just years of building, solving problems, and watching how technology gets sold versus how it actually works in the real world.
And the more I watched the smart home industry grow, the more it started to grate on me.
I saw too many companies dressing up confusion as innovation. I saw products marketed like magic, priced like luxury, and explained like the customer was lucky just to be in the room. Worse still, I watched honest installers, the people doing the actual hard work, get squeezed by lead-gen platforms charging them for rubbish leads before a real job was ever booked. That model never sat right with me. In plain English, I thought it was nonsense.
So instead of complaining from the sidelines, I started building.
The Little Stump Philosophy
I called the project Trunetto, inspired by my late father’s love for Italy. The name means little stump, and that meaning stuck with me immediately. A stump is grounded. It holds firm. It is the base. While a lot of the tech world is busy floating around in the clouds chasing the next flashy trend, I wanted to build from the roots up.
I did not want a bloated company built for headlines. I did not want a boardroom full of people trying to squeeze every last penny out of homeowners and tradespeople. I wanted to build something useful. Something honest. Something that could genuinely help the little guy, whether that is the homeowner trying to make sense of smart home tech or the installer trying to earn a fair living without getting fleeced on junk leads.
On a personal level, I wanted to build something that meant more than another project on a screen. I wanted to create a business with strong roots, something that could give me more freedom, more purpose, and more time with my kids.
Cutting Through the Noise
Trunetto was never meant to be just another gadget site. It was built to become an ecosystem of honest guidance, practical education, and fair opportunity.
At the heart of it is the Troubleshooting Hub, where I’ve hand-built practical guides for the issues people actually run into. Not vague fluff. Not generic filler. Real problems, real fixes, written with the mindset of an engineer rather than a salesman. Whether it is a Nest thermostat going black, a Ring doorbell chewing through battery, or a device behaving like it has developed a personality disorder overnight, the goal is simple: help people get answers fast.
Alongside that is the blog, which I treat as the hype-killer side of the platform. This is where I break things down honestly. Which products are worth your money. Which ones are mostly marketing. What installation should realistically cost. Where people get upsold. Where they get misled. And where the smart home world has made life easier versus where it has simply made things more expensive and more annoying.
Then there is the installer side, which matters just as much to me. Trunetto was built to challenge the usual pay-for-junk-leads madness. My original model was simple: installers browse for free and only pay a modest fee when they see a job they actually want and choose to unlock it. That approach was designed to be fair from day one.
As Trunetto grows, I’m also considering whether a low-cost flat monthly membership might serve honest installers even better. The goal has not changed. Keep it affordable. Keep it fair. Reward good people who take pride in their work instead of squeezing them before they even get a chance.
Built Lean, Built Honest
One of the biggest advantages I had in building Trunetto is that I came into it without Silicon Valley baggage. No ego. No corporate theatre. No pressure to add layers of nonsense just to look impressive in a pitch deck.
That let me build lean. It let me focus on what actually matters: useful content, a strong platform, a better experience for homeowners, and a fairer model for installers. In a strange way, not being an insider turned out to be the advantage. I was not trying to impress the industry. I was trying to fix what annoyed me about it.
For me, success is not some shiny headline or dramatic exit. It is an honest installer landing a worthwhile job. It is a homeowner avoiding the hype tax. It is someone finally getting their home tech working the way it should have in the first place.
That is what Trunetto is really about.
The Foundation Is Planted
Three years in, this is still just the beginning. The little stump is planted, the roots are taking hold, and the mission is the same as it was on day one: build something grounded, useful, and fair in a space that has too often gone the other direction.
