Video Doorbells Troubleshooting
Troubleshoot doorbell cameras and motion detection
Video doorbells are your first line of defense at the front door. When they stop ringing, drop video quality, or miss motion events, you lose visibility into who is at your door — defeating the purpose of having a smart doorbell. A doorbell that fails to alert you when packages arrive or captures blurry footage of visitors provides a false sense of security. Most doorbell problems stem from power issues on wired models, WiFi range limitations on battery models, and motion detection settings that are either too sensitive or not sensitive enough. Our guides cover wired and battery doorbells from Ring, Nest, Arlo, Blink, eufy, and SkyBell — helping you fix chime problems, transformer issues, WiFi drops, and motion detection gaps.
Common Video Doorbells Problems
The top doorbell issues include the indoor chime not ringing, poor video quality especially at night, motion alerts arriving late or not at all, doorbell not charging or draining battery fast, and live view failing to load. When wired doorbells do not trigger the indoor chime, the problem is usually transformer voltage — most smart doorbells require 16-24V AC, but many homes have old 10V transformers designed for simple mechanical chimes. Measuring voltage at the doorbell wires with a multimeter confirms this. Night video appearing washed out or showing only a white glow typically indicates IR reflection from nearby walls, glass, or siding — repositioning the doorbell or adding an angle mount helps. Motion alerts arriving 10+ seconds late trace back to WiFi latency and cloud processing delays. Alerts not appearing at all usually means motion zones do not cover the detection area or sensitivity is set too low. Battery doorbells draining faster than expected often have motion detection set to maximum sensitivity, triggering hundreds of events daily that consume power. Live view failures are almost always WiFi-related — battery doorbells placed far from the router struggle to maintain the bandwidth needed for real-time video.
When to Contact a Professional
If your doorbell transformer needs replacement and you are not comfortable working with household electrical wiring, hire an electrician. Transformer replacement involves 120V connections at the breaker panel and inside the transformer enclosure — working live creates shock risk. Expect to pay $100–175 for transformer replacement including parts. If your wired doorbell installation requires running new wire through walls, an electrician or low-voltage installer can fish wire without damaging drywall. For video quality issues that persist despite WiFi improvements, contact the manufacturer — lens defects, sensor failures, and IR LED malfunctions are hardware issues covered under warranty.
