Common Security Cameras Problems

Users most frequently troubleshoot cameras showing offline, grainy or blurry video quality, motion alerts for every passing car or blowing tree, night vision not switching on, and recordings missing from cloud or SD card storage. Cameras going offline usually indicates WiFi signal weakness — outdoor cameras often sit at the edge of router range where signal drops during weather changes. Check signal strength in the app and consider a WiFi extender positioned between your router and camera. Grainy video typically results from low-light conditions triggering aggressive compression or bandwidth throttling on congested networks. Night vision failures where the image stays black despite visible IR LEDs often means the IR cut filter is stuck — power cycling the camera for 30 seconds can reset it. Excessive motion alerts stem from detection zones including streets, sidewalks, or trees. Redraw zones to cover only entry points and adjust sensitivity down from the default. Missing recordings usually trace to expired cloud subscriptions, full SD cards, or SD cards formatted incorrectly — cameras require FAT32 or exFAT formatting, not NTFS.

When to Contact a Professional

Contact the manufacturer if your camera shows physical damage, produces a burning smell, or has a hardware defect like a stuck IR filter that does not reset with power cycling. For PoE camera wiring issues in walls or ceilings, hiring a low-voltage installer is safer than fishing cables yourself — improper termination causes intermittent failures that are difficult to diagnose later. If an NVR system loses multiple cameras simultaneously and restarting does not help, the NVR power supply or network switch may be failing. Professional NVR diagnostics typically cost $100–200, which is worthwhile before replacing an entire system.
