Problem Description

You are setting up your ADT Command panel for the first time or reconnecting it after moving to a new home. The ADT Command panel is a 7-inch touchscreen that serves as the central controller for your ADT security system. During setup, the panel needs to connect to your home network (WiFi or ethernet), activate with ADT servers, and pair with all your sensors, cameras, and smart home devices. Setup issues include the panel not connecting to WiFi, failing to activate with ADT, sensors not pairing, and the ADT+ app not finding the panel. This guide walks through the complete setup process and troubleshoots common problems at each step.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Most ADT Command panels are installed by ADT technicians during the initial setup visit. DIY setup is possible with the ADT+ self-setup kit but requires calling ADT to activate the panel on your account. The most common setup issue is WiFi connectivity — the panel location (typically near the front door) is often far from the router, and the 2.4GHz-only requirement catches users with newer routers that default to 5GHz. Running an ethernet cable during the technician visit avoids WiFi issues entirely and is worth requesting.

Symptoms

  • ADT Command panel will not connect to WiFi during initial setup
  • Panel shows Activation Failed or Cannot Reach Server during setup
  • Sensors not pairing with the panel — device not found during add
  • ADT+ app cannot find or connect to the panel after installation
  • Panel touchscreen stuck on the ADT logo or setup wizard loop
  • Panel installed by ADT technician but smart home features not working
  • Panel shows No Network Connection after entering WiFi credentials
  • Camera not appearing in the ADT+ app after pairing with the panel

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • WiFi password entered incorrectly during panel setup — no visible password confirmation
  • Panel too far from the router — WiFi signal too weak at the panel wall location
  • Panel not yet activated on ADT account — requires ADT to enable the serial number
  • Sensors still paired to old panel from previous homeowner — need factory reset
  • ADT+ app version outdated and incompatible with new panel firmware
  • Router broadcasting only 5GHz WiFi — ADT Command requires 2.4GHz for initial setup
  • Panel ethernet cable not connected or router port is dead
  • Smart home devices (Z-Wave locks, lights) need separate pairing after panel activation

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not attempt to set up the panel without an active ADT account. The panel requires server-side activation to enable monitoring and app control. Without activation, the panel functions as a standalone alarm only — no professional monitoring, no app control, and no cellular backup. If you bought a home with an existing ADT panel, call ADT to transfer the account or set up a new one before attempting any changes.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Mount the panel and connect power

The ADT Command panel mounts on a wall bracket at eye level, typically near the main entry door. The bracket screws into the wall — use the included anchors if mounting on drywall. Slide the panel onto the bracket from the top (it hooks at the top and swings down). Connect the panel transformer to a nearby outlet — use an outlet that is not controlled by a light switch so the panel maintains constant power. The panel boots when it receives power — the ADT logo appears and after 2-3 minutes the setup wizard starts. If the panel was previously installed elsewhere, it may boot to the home screen instead of the setup wizard — go to Settings to reconfigure network and activation.

2

Connect the panel to your home network

During the setup wizard (or in Settings then Network), select WiFi or Ethernet. For WiFi: the panel will scan for networks. Select your 2.4GHz network — the ADT Command panel supports 2.4GHz only for initial setup. Enter your WiFi password carefully using the on-screen keyboard. There is no show password option, so type slowly and verify each character. Tap Connect and wait up to 60 seconds. The panel will show Connected with a green checkmark. For Ethernet: connect a Cat5e or Cat6 cable from the panel ethernet port (behind the panel, accessible when the panel is swung open on its bracket) to your router. Ethernet is more reliable than WiFi for security panels — use it if a cable run is possible.

3

Activate the panel with ADT

After network connection, the panel attempts to activate with ADT servers. This links the panel serial number to your ADT account and enables monitoring. If activation fails: verify your internet is working, and call ADT at 1-800-ADT-ASAP to confirm the panel serial number is registered to your account. For new ADT subscriptions, activation happens during the initial technician visit or when ADT provisions your account. For DIY setups (ADT+ self-setup kits), activation is done through the ADT+ app — download the app, create an account or log in, and follow the in-app activation flow which will find the panel on your network. The panel must be online (connected to your network) for the app to discover it.

4

Pair sensors with the panel

After activation, add your sensors. On the panel, go to Settings then Devices then Add Device. Select the sensor type (door/window, motion, smoke, etc.). Put the sensor into pairing mode: for most ADT sensors, remove the battery tab or pull the sensor off its mounting plate, wait 10 seconds, and remount or reinsert the battery. The panel should discover the sensor within 30 seconds. Assign it a zone name (Front Door, Kitchen Window, etc.). Test the sensor by opening the door or triggering motion while watching the panel — it should display the zone name and status change. Repeat for all sensors. If a sensor will not pair, it may still be bound to a previous panel — press and hold the sensor reset button (small pinhole) for 10-15 seconds to factory reset it, then try again.

5

Set up cameras and smart home devices

ADT cameras pair through the ADT+ app, not the panel itself. In the app, tap Add Device then Camera and follow the prompts — you will scan a QR code on the camera. The camera connects to your WiFi directly (2.4GHz) and streams through ADT cloud. For Z-Wave smart home devices (locks, lights, thermostats), pair them through the panel: go to Settings then Z-Wave then Add Device. Put the Z-Wave device in pairing mode per its instructions (usually pressing a button 3 times). The panel discovers and adds it. Z-Wave devices connect to the panel directly, not to WiFi. After pairing, test each device from both the panel and the ADT+ app.

6

Configure arming modes, entry/exit delays, and notifications

In the panel Settings, configure your security preferences. Set Entry Delay (time after opening the entry door before the alarm triggers — typically 30-45 seconds, enough time to reach the panel and disarm). Set Exit Delay (time after arming to leave the house — typically 60 seconds). Designate which sensors are active in Home mode (typically only door sensors, not motion) versus Away mode (all sensors active). In the ADT+ app, configure push notifications for events you want alerts on: alarm triggers, arming/disarming, sensor opens, and camera motion. Test by arming the system in Home mode, opening a door, and verifying you receive the alert and can disarm from the app.

7

Fix setup problems

If the panel will not connect to WiFi: move your router temporarily closer during setup, or run a temporary ethernet cable. Once activated, you can switch to WiFi later. If sensors will not pair: make sure you are adding one at a time, not multiple simultaneously. Some ADT sensors have a 3-minute pairing window — act quickly after putting the sensor in pairing mode. If the ADT+ app cannot find the panel: make sure your phone is on the same WiFi network as the panel. Force close and reopen the app. If the panel is on ethernet and your phone is on WiFi, they may be on different subnets if you have a complex network — connect the panel to WiFi temporarily for app discovery. If cameras show offline after pairing: cameras use WiFi independently of the panel — check camera WiFi signal at its installed location.

Quick Solutions

Enter the WiFi password carefully (no confirmation field is shown)
Set up near the router or use ethernet if the wall signal is weak
Confirm ADT has activated the panel's serial number on your account
Factory reset sensors still paired to a previous homeowner's panel
Update the ADT+ app to match the panel firmware
Use a 2.4GHz network for the panel's initial setup
Seat the ethernet cable and verify the router port is live
Pair Z-Wave locks/lights separately after the panel is activated

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Write down your master code (the 4-digit code for arming and disarming) and your installer code (usually 4112 by default — change it during setup). Store these somewhere secure but accessible. The master code is what you use daily; the installer code is needed for adding sensors and changing system programming. If you forget the master code, ADT support can reset it remotely. Label each sensor with its zone number using a small sticker — this makes future troubleshooting much easier when the panel reports trouble on a specific zone.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • WiFi password entered incorrectly during panel setup — no
  • Panel too far from the router — WiFi signal
  • Panel not yet activated on ADT account — requires
  • Sensors still paired to old panel from previous homeowner
  • ADT+ app version outdated and incompatible with new panel
