Problem Description

The Control4 Room Off command fires but some devices stay on — lights turn off but the AV receiver stays on, or shades remain open. Room Off must have every device's off command explicitly programmed, serial devices need staggered timing, and motion/occupancy automations may re-activate devices immediately after the off command.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Room Off leaving the receiver or shades on means those devices are missing from the Room Off macro or their off command times out. In real homes serial AV gear gets skipped. Add every device to the Room Off programming with its off command, and stagger commands to serial devices so none are dropped.

Symptoms

  • Partial room shutdown
  • Some AV or lights stay on
  • Inconsistent behavior by room

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Incomplete room macro membership
  • Device command path timeout
  • Conditional logic excludes some states

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not rely on one-way command sends without response verification.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Add all devices to the Room Off programming

Control4's Room Off does not automatically turn off every device — each device must be explicitly added. In Composer Pro: Programming > select the room > Room Off event. Check the action list. If a device is not listed: it stays on when Room Off fires. Drag each device's 'Off' or 'Power Off' command into the Room Off action list. Common missed devices: AV receivers (need separate 'Power Off' command), amplifiers, motorized shades (need 'Close' command), and fan controllers (need 'Off' command). Push after adding.

2

Check for devices that require specific off commands

Not all devices respond to a generic 'Off.' AV receivers may need 'Discrete Power Off' (not toggle, which could turn it on if already off). Motorized shades need 'Close' not 'Off.' Thermostats need 'Set to Away' not 'Off' (you typically do not want HVAC fully off). In Composer Pro: check the available commands for each device in the Actions panel. Use the most specific off/standby command available rather than a generic 'Off' which may not exist for all device types.

3

Fix command timing for serial-controlled devices

If AV devices on RS-232 serial stay on during Room Off: multiple serial commands firing simultaneously can get lost. Serial ports process one command at a time. Add delays between serial device commands: in the Room Off programming, insert 'Delay 1000ms' (1 second) between each serial device power-off command. This gives each device time to process before the next command is sent. IP-controlled devices can usually handle simultaneous commands without delays.

4

Check for automations that re-activate devices after Room Off

A motion sensor, occupancy sensor, or other trigger may detect activity and turn devices back on immediately after Room Off fires. The room appears to not turn off, but it actually did for a split second. In Composer Pro: check for programming triggered by device state changes or sensor events. Add a condition to these automations: 'Only if Room Off was not triggered in the last 60 seconds' using a variable or timer. This prevents immediate re-activation after a deliberate Room Off.

5

Test Room Off from different interfaces

Test from the app, a touch panel, and a keypad to verify Room Off works consistently. If it works from the app but not a keypad: the keypad button may be programmed to a different command (not Room Off). In Composer Pro: check the keypad button's programming — it should fire the room's Room Off event. If the button fires 'Toggle Light' instead of 'Room Off': reprogram it. Each interface can have different programming for the same physical action.

Quick Solutions

Audit Room Off macro membership
Increase reliability for slow endpoints
Remove unsafe conditional exclusions

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Room-level macros should include explicit success checks for critical endpoints.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Incomplete room macro membership
  • Device command path timeout
  • Conditional logic excludes some states
