Problem Description

When trying to add a Matter device, the controller app rejects the QR code scan or the manually entered 11-digit setup code with an error such as Invalid code, QR code not recognized, or Setup code already used. The device is in commissioning mode and the LED is blinking, but the app cannot validate the code. Matter setup codes encode cryptographic device identity — code rejection means either the code cannot be read accurately, the device is no longer in a fresh commissioning state, or the code has been used and not cleared.

Symptoms

  • App shows Invalid setup code or QR code not recognized after scanning
  • Manual 11-digit code entry is rejected as invalid
  • QR code scans and appears to load but then shows an error immediately
  • Setup code works in one controller app but is rejected in another
  • Device was previously commissioned and the original QR code is now rejected

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Camera cannot read the QR code clearly due to lighting, distance, or print quality
  • Device was previously commissioned and must be factory reset before the code is valid again
  • The 11-digit code was entered with a transcription error
  • Device is not actually in commissioning mode despite LED indication
  • Code belongs to a different device or a device on a different account

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Each factory reset gives the same QR code a fresh commissioning window. The QR code itself does not change — it is the device state that determines whether the code is valid.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Clean the QR Code Label and Improve Scan Conditions

Matter QR codes are often printed on small labels on the device body, power cable, or inside the battery compartment. Dust, smudges, or the curvature of the label surface can prevent accurate scanning. Clean the label with a dry cloth and hold your phone 6 to 8 inches away from the code in good lighting. Avoid scanning under bright overhead lights that create glare on the label surface. If the label has any physical damage, use the manual 11-digit setup code printed below the QR code instead.

2

Factory Reset the Device to Restore a Valid Commissioning State

A Matter QR code or setup code is only valid for a single commissioning session per factory reset. If the device has been previously commissioned — even if that commissioning was on a different account or never fully completed — the code is no longer valid until the device is returned to factory state. Perform a factory reset using the reset procedure in your device manual. After the reset is confirmed by LED flash or audio tone, immediately attempt commissioning again using the same QR code or setup code, which is now valid for a new session.

3

Use Manual Code Entry as a Fallback for QR Scan Failures

If your phone camera cannot accurately read the Matter QR code, use the manual 11-digit setup code instead. In Apple Home tap Add Accessory then More Options then enter code manually. In Google Home tap Add then Set up device then Have something already set up then enter manually. In Alexa tap Devices then Add Device then enter code manually. The 11-digit code is printed directly below the QR code on the device label or in the printed quick start guide. Enter the code exactly — it is case-sensitive on some platforms and requires the correct grouping.

4

Verify the Device Is in Active Commissioning Mode

Before scanning the QR code, confirm the device is actively in commissioning mode — not just powered on. Commissioning mode is indicated by a specific LED pattern described in your device manual, typically a fast blink or alternating color pattern. A solid LED usually indicates the device is already paired to a controller. A slow blink typically means the device is powered but not in commissioning mode. If the device shows it is already paired, factory reset it first to open a fresh commissioning window before scanning.

5

Locate the Correct QR Code if the Device Has Multiple Labels

Some Matter devices have multiple QR codes — one for the manufacturer app setup and a separate one specifically for Matter commissioning. Using the wrong QR code in the Matter controller app results in an invalid code error. Look for a label marked with the Matter logo (the stylized M) or text that says Matter or Thread pairing code. The Matter QR code may also be found in the manufacturer app under device settings or on a card included in the packaging. If in doubt, use the manual 11-digit code from the documentation which is specifically designated for Matter setup.

Quick Solutions

Clean the QR code label and improve lighting for a cleaner camera scan
Factory reset the device to make the QR code valid for a fresh commissioning
Use manual code entry if QR scan fails repeatedly
Verify device is in active commissioning mode before scanning
Check that the code on the device matches the code in the manufacturer app or packaging

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

Matter setup codes can also be found in the manufacturer's app under device information after the device is added via the native app. This is useful if the physical label is worn or missing.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Camera cannot read the QR code clearly
  • Device was previously commissioned and must be factory reset
  • The 11-digit code was entered with a transcription error
  • Device is not actually in commissioning mode despite LED
  • Code belongs to a different device or a device
