Problem Description

You are setting up the Yale Approach Lock on your door. Check your deadbolt compatibility first — the Approach Lock works with most standard single-cylinder deadbolts. It mounts on the inside of the door over the existing thumbturn using a mounting plate and adapter. The deadbolt stays in place; the Approach Lock rotates the thumbturn. This guide covers compatibility, mounting, and app pairing.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Setting up the Yale Approach starts with confirming your single-cylinder deadbolt is compatible, then mounting the retrofit over the thumbturn and calibrating it. In real homes a deadbolt that binds or a skipped calibration causes failed locks and drained batteries. Check compatibility, mount it square, run the calibration, then set up Auto-Unlock and any WiFi module.

Symptoms

  • Lock does not respond to app commands
  • Keypad codes stopped working
  • Auto-lock feature not engaging
  • Lock shows offline in the app
  • Battery draining too quickly
  • Lock makes grinding noise but does not engage
  • Voice unlock commands fail

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Deadbolt not compatible or binding
  • Calibration step skipped or incomplete
  • Retrofit not mounted square over the thumbturn
  • Batteries low during setup
  • Phone Bluetooth or location off during pairing
  • WiFi module not configured for remote
  • Door or strike misalignment
  • App permissions not granted

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always keep a physical backup key accessible outside your home in case of total lock failure. Never perform a factory reset while locked out as this may disable all electronic access. Ensure battery level is above 50 percent before firmware updates to prevent corruption.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check your deadbolt compatibility

The Yale Approach Lock fits most standard single-cylinder deadbolts. Your door needs at least 1 inch of flat surface around the deadbolt thumb turn, and the thumb turn must fit one of the included adapters. Check the Yale compatibility guide if you have a non-standard deadbolt. The Approach Lock does not replace the deadbolt — it attaches over the interior thumb turn.

Remove the interior escutcheon

Remove the two screws holding your interior deadbolt thumb turn assembly. Keep the screws. The exterior side stays untouched — your key and exterior hardware remain unchanged. The mounting plate uses these same screw holes, so no drilling is needed.

3

Mount the lock and install batteries

Attach the Yale mounting plate using the original screws. Select the correct thumb turn adapter, attach it to the plate, and snap the lock body on. Insert four AA batteries into the battery compartment. The lock powers on automatically. Test by pressing the lock and unlock buttons — the deadbolt should move smoothly. If it strains, check that the adapter is seated correctly and the deadbolt is not stiff.

Set up in the Yale Access app

Download the Yale Access app (it shares accounts with August — same login works). Tap Set Up a Device and select the Approach Lock. The app connects via Bluetooth. Follow the calibration steps: manually position the deadbolt to locked, then unlocked, so the lock learns the rotation range. After calibrating, install DoorSense if included — mount the magnet on the frame within 1.5 inches of the lock. Calibrate DoorSense in the app.

5

Configure Auto-Unlock and Auto-Lock

In the Yale Access app, go to lock settings. Enable Auto-Unlock — grant the app Always location permission and Bluetooth access. The lock uses your phone geofence and Bluetooth proximity to unlock as you approach. Enable Auto-Lock to lock the door automatically after a set time (1-30 minutes). If DoorSense is installed, Auto-Lock waits for the door to close before engaging. Test both features by leaving and returning home.

Quick Solutions

Replace all batteries with fresh ones
Recalibrate the lock through the app
Realign the door strike plate
Check WiFi bridge or hub connection
Reset and reprogram keypad codes
Update lock firmware to latest version

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

Set up auto-lock to engage 30 seconds after the door closes so you never accidentally leave it unlocked. Create temporary access codes for guests and service workers that automatically expire after a set time period.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.
