Problem Description

Your Yale Assure Lock has stopped working properly or is malfunctioning. The Assure Lock is not performing its core functions as expected, which disrupts your smart home routine and leaves you without the automation and control features you depend on. Specifically, the issue involves lock auto-lock feature not working. The steps below walk you through diagnosing the root cause and applying proven fixes so your Assure Lock works reliably again.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Auto-Lock on a Yale needs the feature enabled, DoorSense reading the door as closed, and a deadbolt that throws freely, so a lock that will not auto-lock usually has one of those off, not a broken motor. In real homes DoorSense sees the door as open, or the bolt binds against a misaligned strike. Enable Auto-Lock, calibrate DoorSense, and fix any bolt binding so it can lock on its own.

Symptoms

  • Lock does not respond to app commands
  • Keypad codes stopped working
  • Auto-lock feature not engaging
  • Lock shows offline in the app
  • Battery draining too quickly
  • Lock makes grinding noise but does not engage
  • Voice unlock commands fail

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Auto-Lock not enabled or timer set to Off
  • DoorSense reading the door as open
  • Deadbolt binding so the motor cannot throw it
  • Batteries too low for the lock motor
  • Door left ajar so Auto-Lock holds off
  • Auto-Lock timer longer than expected
  • Firmware or app setting reset
  • Strike misalignment stopping full lock

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Auto-lock uses extra battery - expect slightly shorter battery life.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check that Auto-Lock is enabled

Open the Yale Access app, select your lock, and go to Settings > Auto-Lock. Make sure it is toggled on and the timer is set (1-30 minutes). If it was already on but not working, toggle it off, wait 5 seconds, and toggle it back on. This resets the feature. After enabling, unlock the door and close it — the lock should engage automatically after the timer expires.

Check DoorSense status

If DoorSense is installed and calibrated, Auto-Lock waits for DoorSense to confirm the door is closed before locking. If DoorSense reads the door as open (even when closed), Auto-Lock will never trigger. Check the DoorSense status in the app. If it shows open when the door is closed, recalibrate DoorSense or adjust the magnet position. This is the most common reason Auto-Lock fails silently.

3

Check battery level

When batteries are low, the lock disables Auto-Lock to conserve power for manual operation. Check the battery level in the Yale Access app. If it is below 20%, replace all four AA batteries. Auto-Lock resumes automatically after the batteries are replaced. Low batteries also cause the motor to stall during Auto-Lock attempts, which may look like the feature is not working.

4

Check for holds or overrides

If you manually unlocked and held the door open before closing it, the Auto-Lock timer starts from when the door was unlocked, not when it was closed. If you held the door open longer than the Auto-Lock timer, the lock may have already attempted to lock (and failed because the door was open, without DoorSense), and then reset. Close the door within the timer period and verify the lock engages.

5

Recalibrate the lock

If the lock motor sounds like it is trying to lock but the deadbolt does not fully extend, the lock needs recalibration. Go to Settings > Calibrate Lock in the Yale Access app. Follow the steps to teach the lock the full locked and unlocked positions. If the deadbolt is stiff, fix the alignment or lubricate it before recalibrating — Auto-Lock cannot overcome mechanical resistance that manual calibration reveals.

Quick Solutions

Enable auto-lock
Fix DoorSense
Adjust timer
Check lock mechanism

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

Set up auto-lock to engage 30 seconds after the door closes so you never accidentally leave it unlocked. Create temporary access codes for guests and service workers that automatically expire after a set time period.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Auto-Lock not enabled or timer set to Off
  • DoorSense reading the door as open
  • Deadbolt binding so the motor cannot throw it
  • Batteries too low for the lock motor
  • Door left ajar so Auto-Lock holds off
