Problem Description

Your Pentair IntelliFlo variable speed pump is displaying an error code on the small LCD panel on the top of the motor housing. The pump has stopped running and the LCD shows a number or text code. IntelliFlo pumps use built-in diagnostics to detect electrical faults, flow problems, thermal events, and communication errors. The LCD panel on top of the motor housing shows the current RPM during normal operation and switches to an error code when a fault is detected. The pump will not restart until the error condition is cleared.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

IntelliFlo error codes each map to a real cause: a drive fault clears with a reset, a comm fault is RS-485 wiring, overtemperature is cooling, overcurrent is a jam or electrical fault, and a priming error is a suction-side leak. In real installs a comm fault after adding automation and an overcurrent from a jammed impeller are common.

Read the code and fix the matching cause rather than swapping the drive blind.

Symptoms

  • Drive shows an error code
  • Pump will not run
  • Drive Not Ready or Drive Fault message
  • Communication fault with automation
  • Pump stops and flashes a code
  • Overtemperature warning
  • Overcurrent warning
  • Priming or flow error

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Drive fault needing a reset
  • RS-485 communication fault
  • Drive overtemperature (heat or ventilation)
  • Overcurrent from a jam or electrical fault
  • Priming or flow failure (air or restriction)
  • Loose drive wiring
  • Blocked drive cooling
  • Impeller jam

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Error: Drive Not Ready / Drive Fault

This error appears on the LCD panel on top of the IntelliFlo motor housing. It means the variable frequency drive (VFD) inside the pump detected an electrical fault. The most common cause is a power surge or momentary power loss. To clear: turn off the pump at the breaker, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on. If the error returns immediately, check the incoming voltage at the pump's terminal block (inside the wiring compartment cover on the bottom of the motor — remove the 4 Phillips screws on the cover plate). The IntelliFlo requires 230V single-phase. If voltage is below 210V or above 250V, the VFD will fault.

2

Error: Priming / Flow

The pump started but didn't detect water flow within the priming timeout (typically 5 minutes). The IntelliFlo uses back-EMF sensing to detect if the impeller is moving water. Check the pump strainer basket (the clear lid on the front of the pump housing — twist counterclockwise to open). Remove debris from the basket. Also check the suction line for air leaks — look at the threaded fitting where the PVC pipe connects to the pump inlet (the port on the front of the pump below the strainer lid). Air bubbles in the strainer basket during operation indicate a suction-side air leak, usually at a pipe union, valve stem O-ring, or the strainer lid O-ring itself. Lubricate the strainer lid O-ring with silicone-based pool lube.

3

Error: Overcurrent

The motor drew more amperage than its rated limit. On the IntelliFlo VSF, the maximum is 15A at 230V. Common causes: a clogged impeller (debris wrapped around the impeller inside the volute housing), a stuck check valve downstream, or too many suction/return valves closed simultaneously. To inspect the impeller, turn off the breaker, remove the 6 bolts on the volute plate (the circular cover on the back of the pump), and pull the volute away from the motor. The impeller is the finned wheel attached to the motor shaft — clear any debris and spin it by hand to confirm free rotation.

4

Error: Overtemperature

The motor's internal temperature sensor detected heat above the safe operating limit (typically 194°F / 90°C inside the motor windings). The IntelliFlo shuts down to prevent winding damage. Common causes: running at high RPM in direct sunlight without shade, blocked ventilation slots on the motor housing (the horizontal vents on the sides of the motor), or ambient temperature above 104°F (40°C). Clear any leaves or debris from the motor vents. If the pump is in a fully enclosed equipment room, it needs ventilation — the motor generates significant heat at high speeds. Wait 30 minutes for the motor to cool before restarting.

5

Error: Communication Fault / RS-485

The pump lost communication with the automation controller (IntelliCenter, EasyTouch, or SunTouch) over the RS-485 serial bus. On the IntelliFlo motor, the RS-485 connection is a 4-pin terminal strip inside the wiring compartment on the bottom of the motor housing. Check that the green (Data+) and yellow (Data-) wires are secure. If you have multiple devices on the RS-485 bus (multiple pumps, chlorinator, actuators), check the bus termination — the last device on the daisy chain needs a 120-ohm termination resistor between Data+ and Data-. Without termination, signals reflect and cause intermittent communication drops.

6

Reset the Drive and Clear Stored Faults

On the IntelliFlo control panel (the 4 buttons on top of the motor housing), press and hold the Start/Stop button for 10 seconds. The LCD displays 'CLEAR FAULTS' and resets the error history. If the pump was in lockout mode (3 consecutive faults within 30 minutes), this clears the lockout and allows the pump to restart. After clearing, press Start to begin a new priming cycle. Watch the LCD — it shows RPM ramping up during priming. If the pump successfully primes and reaches the target RPM without faulting again, the issue was transient.

Quick Solutions

Identify the code: Drive Not Ready or Drive Fault
Reset the drive and clear stored faults
Fix the RS-485 communication wiring
Address overtemperature with cooling and ventilation
Clear an overcurrent jam and check wiring
Resolve priming or flow (air leak or restriction)
Improve drive ventilation
Clear the impeller

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

The IntelliFlo VSF installation and user guide is at https://www.pentair.com/content/dam/extranet/residential-pool/manuals/intelliflo-vsf-installation-guide-523029.pdf — it includes all error code definitions, wiring diagrams, and RS-485 addressing. The drive board sits behind the front cover panel held by four Phillips screws. Error codes display on the pump's built-in LCD. The most common codes are drive faults (overload from clogged impeller) and priming errors (air leak on suction side). After clearing any fault, press Stop then Start to restart the pump — power cycling via breaker resets the drive board memory and clears the fault log.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Drive fault needing a reset
  • RS-485 communication fault
  • Drive overtemperature (heat or ventilation)
  • Overcurrent from a jam or electrical fault
  • Priming or flow failure (air or restriction)
