- Intercom not enabled in the Home app
- Devices not in the same home/Apple ID
- Intercom recipients/notifications not configured
Problem Description
You want to set up the Intercom feature on your Apple HomePod to broadcast voice messages to other HomePods, iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches in your home. Intercom is enabled in the Home app and lets you send and receive audio messages between rooms or to family members who are away. This guide covers enabling and using Intercom.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
HomePod Intercom lets you broadcast a quick voice message to every HomePod (and to family iPhones, iPads, and Watches) in your home — so setup is really about the Home app: enabling Intercom, choosing who can use it and when, and making sure everyone's devices are in the same home on the same Apple ID family. It's a whole-home feature, not a per-speaker one.
In the Home app, open Home Settings and turn on Intercom, setting the notifications and who's allowed to send and receive. Confirm all HomePods and family members belong to the same home, with iOS and HomePod software updated and "Hey Siri" enabled. Once configured, say "Hey Siri, Intercom..." and your message plays on the other HomePods and family devices.

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Intercom not enabled in the Home app
- Devices not in the same home/Apple ID
- Intercom recipients/notifications not configured
- iOS/HomePod out of date
- 'Hey Siri' disabled
- Family members not added to the home
- Network issue
- Notification settings off
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Smart speakers are always listening for the wake word when unmuted. Review and delete your voice history regularly in the app privacy settings. Never place the speaker in bathrooms or near water sources as moisture can permanently damage internal components.
Step-by-Step Solution
Enable Intercom in the Home app
Intercom lets you send voice messages to all HomePods in your home. Open the Home app. Go to Home Settings > Intercom. Turn on Intercom. Choose who can send Intercom messages: Everyone in Home, specific people, or When I Am Home only. All HomePods and HomePod minis in the home automatically participate in Intercom.
Send an Intercom message
Say Hey Siri, Intercom followed by your message: Hey Siri, Intercom, dinner is ready. Siri broadcasts your message to every HomePod in the house simultaneously. Each HomePod plays the message with an Intercom chime first. You can also send Intercom messages from iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch — in the Home app, tap the Intercom icon and speak your message.
Send Intercom to a specific room
To send a message to only one room: say Hey Siri, Intercom the kitchen, are you ready to go? Siri sends the message only to the HomePod in the kitchen. This requires that your HomePods are assigned to rooms in the Home app. If you have a stereo pair in a room, both speakers play the Intercom message.
Reply to an Intercom message
When someone sends an Intercom message, any HomePod can reply. After receiving the message, say Hey Siri, reply followed by your response: Hey Siri, reply, be right down. The reply goes back to the HomePod that sent the original message. You can also reply from your iPhone or Apple Watch if you received the Intercom notification.
Control Intercom notifications on personal devices
By default, Intercom notifications also appear on iPhones and Apple Watches of household members. To control this: on your iPhone, go to the Home app > Home Settings > Intercom. Set When you are to: Never (only HomePods play Intercom), When I Am Home (notifications when on home WiFi only), or Anywhere (get notifications everywhere). If Intercom notifications are annoying when you are at work, set to When I Am Home.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
Place your speaker in a central location at ear height for best voice pickup. Avoid corners and bookshelves which muffle the microphones. If you have multiple speakers, set up multi-room audio groups so music plays in sync across rooms.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
