Problem Description
Intercom on the HomePod mini broadcasts voice messages to your other HomePods and family Apple devices. This covers Intercom not working on the mini — messages not sending or arriving, or the feature not available.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
HomePod mini Intercom is the same whole-home feature as on the larger HomePod — it sends voice messages across all your HomePods and to family iPhones, iPads, and Watches. So when it's not working on a mini, the fix is in the Home app configuration and each device's setup, not the mini's speaker.
Enable Intercom in the Home app and set who can send and receive with notifications on, confirm the mini is in the same home on the same Apple ID family, and update iOS and HomePod software with "Hey Siri" enabled. Verify your HomePod minis are set up in the Home app
Each HomePod mini must be added to the Home app and assigned to a room. In the Home app, check that all HomePod minis appear in their correct rooms. Intercom works across all HomePods in the home — including HomePod minis, HomePod 2nd Gen, and original HomePods. If a HomePod mini is not assigned to a room, it still receives Intercom messages but you cannot target it by room name.
Send Intercom from a HomePod mini
Say Hey Siri, Intercom followed by your message. The HomePod mini sends the message to all other HomePods in the home. The sending HomePod does not play back its own message — only the receiving HomePods play it. To target a specific room: Hey Siri, Intercom the bedroom, time to wake up. The message plays only on the HomePod(s) in that room.
Receive and reply to Intercom messages
When a HomePod mini receives an Intercom message, it plays a chime followed by the voice message. The volume of Intercom messages matches the current HomePod volume — if the volume is muted, you will not hear the message. To reply: say Hey Siri, reply and then your message. The reply goes to the HomePod that sent the original Intercom.
Use Intercom from iPhone when away from home
If you have Intercom notifications set to Anywhere, you can send Intercom messages to your HomePod minis from your iPhone even when you are not at home. In the Home app, tap the Intercom icon (waveform symbol) at the top right. Record your message. It plays on all HomePods at home. This is useful for telling the family you are on your way home or reminding someone to lock up.
Adjust Intercom volume and Do Not Disturb
Intercom messages play at the current HomePod volume. If a HomePod mini is set to very low volume for nighttime, Intercom messages are also quiet. Adjust volume on each HomePod mini to a level that makes Intercom audible. If you want to disable Intercom on a specific HomePod at night, enable Do Not Disturb on that HomePod (in the Home app, tap the HomePod tile > DND). Do Not Disturb blocks Intercom messages.
