- Intercom not enabled / recipients not set
- Devices on different homes/Apple IDs
- Notifications off on iPhones
Problem Description
Your HomePod Intercom feature is not working — messages aren't being sent or received between HomePods. Intercom must be enabled in the Home app under Home Settings > Intercom. All HomePods must be on the same Home and signed into the same Apple ID. This guide covers enabling Intercom, checking settings, and fixing delivery issues.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
Intercom failing usually comes down to configuration across devices rather than a single fault: it only works when all HomePods and family devices are in the same home on the same Apple ID family, Intercom is enabled with the right permissions, and receiving devices have notifications on and aren't muting messages with a Focus mode.
Enable Intercom in the Home app and set who can send and receive, confirm every HomePod and family iPhone/iPad/Watch is in the same home, and turn on Intercom notifications on the phones. Check that a Focus or Do Not Disturb isn't blocking incoming messages, update iOS and HomePod software, and make sure "Hey Siri" is on. With the home and devices aligned, Intercom flows both ways.
Symptoms
- Intercom not working
- Messages not sending or arriving
- One-way intercom
- No notification of messages
- Intercom to iPhone fails
- Only HomePods, not phones
- Intercom stopped
- Feature unreliable
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Intercom not enabled / recipients not set
- Devices on different homes/Apple IDs
- Notifications off on iPhones
- 'Hey Siri' disabled
- Focus/Do Not Disturb blocking messages
- iOS/HomePod out of date
- Network/offline devices
- Family Sharing not configured
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Smart speakers are always listening for the wake word when unmuted. Review and delete your voice history regularly in the app privacy settings. Never place the speaker in bathrooms or near water sources as moisture can permanently damage internal components.
Step-by-Step Solution
Check Intercom is enabled in Home Settings
Open the Home app on your iPhone. Go to Home Settings > Intercom. Make sure Intercom is toggled on. Check the permission setting: Everyone, specific household members, or When I Am Home. If set to When I Am Home and you are away, you cannot send Intercom messages. Change to Everyone or specific people if you want Intercom to work from anywhere.
Verify all HomePods are connected
In the Home app, check that all HomePods show as responsive (not grayed out or showing Not Responding). An offline HomePod cannot receive Intercom messages. If a HomePod is unresponsive, unplug it for 10 seconds and plug it back in. Wait 2 minutes for it to reconnect. Intercom requires at least two HomePods (or one HomePod and an iPhone/Apple Watch with Intercom notifications enabled).
Check Do Not Disturb settings
If a HomePod has Do Not Disturb enabled, it blocks Intercom messages on that specific HomePod. In the Home app, tap the HomePod tile. Check if the Do Not Disturb moon icon is active. If DND is on, disable it. You can also check DND schedules — some users set DND overnight and forget that it also blocks Intercom.
Test sending to a specific room
If broadcasting to all HomePods fails, try sending to a specific room: Hey Siri, Intercom the kitchen, hello. If this works but the all-rooms broadcast does not, there may be one HomePod causing the issue. Check each HomePod individually by sending Intercom to each room. The problematic HomePod will be the one that does not receive the message — restart it or factory reset and re-add.
Restart HomePods and try again
If Intercom was working and stopped: restart all HomePods by unplugging them for 10 seconds each and plugging them back in. Wait 3 minutes for all HomePods to boot and connect. Then test Intercom. Also check for HomePod software updates: in the Home app, go to Home Settings > Software Update. Install available updates on all HomePods. Intercom features are firmware-dependent — outdated firmware can break Intercom.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
Place your speaker in a central location at ear height for best voice pickup. Avoid corners and bookshelves which muffle the microphones. If you have multiple speakers, set up multi-room audio groups so music plays in sync across rooms.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
- Intercom not enabled / recipients not set
- Devices on different homes/Apple IDs
- Notifications off on iPhones
- 'Hey Siri' disabled
- Focus/Do Not Disturb blocking messages
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
