Problem Description

Your Sonos Era 300 supports Dolby Atmos but you cannot hear the spatial audio effect. Music sounds flat like regular stereo instead of the immersive 3D sound Atmos promises. You paid extra for Atmos capability but it sounds identical to your old speaker. The spatial audio feature does not seem to work.

Symptoms

  • Music sounds flat with no spatial effect
  • Atmos indicator not showing in Sonos app
  • Same song sounds better on phone with AirPods
  • Cannot tell difference between Atmos and stereo
  • Atmos worked briefly then stopped
  • Upward firing drivers not producing sound

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Music service not streaming Dolby Atmos version
  • Atmos not enabled in music app settings
  • Room placement blocking upward firing drivers
  • TruePlay tuning not completed for room
  • Expecting surround sound from single speaker
  • Source content not actually in Dolby Atmos format

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

TruePlay stores room calibration on the speaker. If you move the speaker to a different room run TruePlay again.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Verify Music Service Supports Atmos

Not all music services stream Dolby Atmos to Sonos. Apple Music and Amazon Music HD support Atmos on Sonos. Spotify does not support Atmos at all. If using Spotify you will never get Atmos sound. Switch to Apple Music or Amazon Music HD for Atmos content.

2

Enable Atmos in Music App

Even with Apple Music or Amazon Music HD you must enable Atmos in settings. In Apple Music go to Settings then Music then Dolby Atmos and select Always On. In Amazon Music go to Settings then Streaming Quality then enable Dolby Atmos. Without these settings you get standard stereo.

3

Check Speaker Placement

The Era 300 has upward firing drivers that bounce sound off your ceiling for spatial effect. If placed in a bookshelf, under a cabinet, or close to ceiling the upward drivers cannot create the effect. Place the speaker with at least 2 feet clearance above it and position away from walls.

4

Run TruePlay Tuning

TruePlay adjusts the speaker output for your specific room. Without it the Atmos effect may not be optimized. Open Sonos app on iPhone and go to Settings then System then your Era 300 then TruePlay. Follow the instructions walking around your room. TruePlay requires iPhone as Android does not support it.

Test With Known Atmos Content

Search for Dolby Atmos playlist on your music service. These are verified Atmos tracks. Play one and listen for height and spatial effects. If Atmos still sounds flat after proper setup your expectations may exceed what a single speaker can produce. Full Atmos home theater uses multiple speakers including ceiling units.

Quick Solutions

Use music service that supports Atmos on Sonos
Enable Dolby Atmos in music service settings
Position speaker with clearance above for reflections
Run TruePlay tuning with iPhone
Understand Atmos spatial audio vs surround sound
Play confirmed Atmos content to test

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

A single Era 300 produces spatial audio but not true surround sound. For surround you need a full Sonos home theater setup with multiple speakers.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Music service not streaming Dolby Atmos version
  • Atmos not enabled in music app settings
  • Room placement blocking upward firing drivers
  • TruePlay tuning not completed for room
  • Expecting surround sound from single speaker
