- Not held long enough on the power/BT button
- Not set up on WiFi first
- Phone Bluetooth off / out of range
Problem Description
You want to put your Sonos Roam into Bluetooth pairing mode to connect it directly to a phone or tablet. Press and hold the Bluetooth button on the back of the Roam until the LED flashes blue — this puts it in discoverable pairing mode. The Roam can connect to WiFi (for Sonos system) and Bluetooth simultaneously. This guide covers entering pairing mode and switching between WiFi and Bluetooth.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
To put the Sonos Roam into Bluetooth pairing mode, press the power/Bluetooth button on the back once (a short press) and then hold it until you hear the pairing tone and it appears on your phone. Like the Era, the Roam needs to be set up on WiFi in the app first before Bluetooth is available.
Start by finishing WiFi setup, then use that button to enter pairing mode with your phone's Bluetooth on and nearby. If it won't pair, make sure it isn't already connected to another device; the Roam remembers Bluetooth devices, so "forget" a stale one if it keeps grabbing the wrong connection.
Symptoms
- Cannot enter Bluetooth pairing
- Roam will not pair to phone
- Bluetooth button unclear
- Pairing tone not heard
- Will not connect over Bluetooth
- Switches back to WiFi
- Paired but no sound
- Reconnect issues
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Not held long enough on the power/BT button
- Not set up on WiFi first
- Phone Bluetooth off / out of range
- Already connected to another device
- On WiFi instead of Bluetooth
- Firmware out of date
- Bluetooth toggled off
- Stale pairing
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Smart speakers are always listening for the wake word when unmuted. Review and delete your voice history regularly in the app privacy settings. Never place the speaker in bathrooms or near water sources as moisture can permanently damage internal components.
Tools & Requirements
Step-by-Step Solution
Press and hold the Bluetooth button
On the back of the Sonos Roam, find the power/Bluetooth button. With the Roam powered on, press and hold this button for about 2 seconds until you hear a chime and the LED flashes blue. The speaker is now in Bluetooth pairing mode and discoverable by your phone, tablet, or laptop. Pairing mode stays active for about 5 minutes before timing out.
Pair from the speaker
On your phone or tablet, go to Settings > Bluetooth. Look for "Sonos Roam" in the list of available devices and tap it to pair. The Roam supports Bluetooth 5.0 with a range of about 30 feet. After pairing, the LED stops flashing and you hear a confirmation chime. You can now play audio from any app on your phone through the Roam via Bluetooth.
Switch between WiFi and Bluetooth
The Roam automatically connects to your home WiFi when in range. When you leave WiFi range and start Bluetooth audio from your phone, it switches to Bluetooth. You can also force Bluetooth mode by pressing the Bluetooth button once. To switch back to WiFi, press the Bluetooth button again. The Roam can only use one connection type at a time — WiFi takes priority if both are available and you start playing from the Sonos app.
Pair with a new device
The Roam remembers previously paired Bluetooth devices. To pair with a new device, press and hold the Bluetooth button until you hear the pairing chime. The new device appears in your Bluetooth settings. The Roam can store multiple pairings but only streams from one at a time. To switch to a different paired device, disconnect Bluetooth on the current device and connect from the other one.
Fix pairing failures
If the Roam does not appear in your Bluetooth device list, make sure it is in pairing mode (flashing blue LED). Move within 5 feet of the speaker. If it still does not appear, restart the Roam by holding the power button for 5 seconds until it turns off, then power it back on and try pairing again. On your phone, delete any existing "Sonos Roam" entries from your Bluetooth paired devices list and start fresh. If you have multiple Sonos Roams, each one has a unique Bluetooth name to distinguish them.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If pairing fails after multiple attempts, the device may still be registered to a previous account — factory-reset it before trying to add it to a new one.

Pairing failures almost always come down to distance during the initial handshake — manufacturers seriously understate how close you actually need to be.
- Not held long enough on the power/BT button
- Not set up on WiFi first
- Phone Bluetooth off / out of range
- Already connected to another device
- On WiFi instead of Bluetooth
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
