- Switch firmware crashed / needs a power cycle
- Power outage corrupted the switch state
- WiFi credentials changed, so it can't reconnect
Problem Description
Your GE CYNC smart switch is completely unresponsive. Physical button presses do nothing and the app shows it as offline or unavailable. The switch LED may be off entirely. This can happen after firmware updates, power outages, or WiFi network changes.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
A completely unresponsive GE CYNC switch - dead to both the physical paddle and the app, often with no LED - is usually a power or firmware-state problem rather than a failed unit. The most common triggers are a power event: an outage or a WiFi/network change can leave the switch's firmware hung or unable to reconnect. The first move is a power cycle at the breaker (off about 30 seconds, then on), which reboots the switch and clears most hangs, and while you're there, confirm the breaker itself hasn't tripped and cut power to the switch entirely.
If a power cycle doesn't revive it, the issue is usually the connection or a corrupted state. A changed WiFi name or password leaves the switch with credentials it can't use, and a router reboot can hand it a new IP that the app loses track of - reserving a DHCP IP prevents the latter, and re-entering credentials fixes the former. When the switch is still dead, a factory reset and re-adding it in the Cync app clears a corrupted firmware state, and updating the firmware afterward prevents a repeat. On no-neutral models specifically, too small an LED load can cause flaky power, so verify the connected load meets the minimum. Only after power, reset, credentials, and load are ruled out is a genuine hardware failure likely.
Symptoms
- Physical button press does nothing
- No LED activity on the switch
- App shows the device offline
- Switch stopped working after a power outage
- Alexa/Google can't find the switch
- Worked yesterday, dead today
- Switch frozen after a firmware update
- Unresponsive to both app and paddle
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Switch firmware crashed / needs a power cycle
- Power outage corrupted the switch state
- WiFi credentials changed, so it can't reconnect
- Circuit breaker tripped
- Router assigned a new IP address
- No-neutral switch's minimum-load issue
- Switch hardware failure
- Weak 2.4GHz signal dropping it offline
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not repeatedly toggle the breaker rapidly as this can damage switch electronics. Wait at least 30 seconds between power cycles.
Step-by-Step Solution
Power Cycle at the Breaker
Go to your electrical panel and turn off the breaker for the switch circuit. Wait 30 seconds then turn it back on. This forces a complete reboot of the switch electronics. Wait 60 seconds for the switch to reconnect to WiFi and check the app.
Factory Reset the Switch
Toggle the switch on and off 5 times rapidly or hold the small recessed reset button (on the side of the switch faceplate, accessible with a paperclip) for 10 seconds depending on your model. The LED should flash indicating reset mode. The switch will erase its WiFi settings and need to be set up again in the CYNC app.
Re-add to CYNC App
After resetting open the CYNC app and remove the old device entry if it still appears. Then tap Add Device and follow the setup flow. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone and you are within a few feet of the switch during setup.
Check for Firmware Update
After reconnecting check the CYNC app for firmware updates. Go to the device settings and look for a firmware update option. Install any available updates. Firmware updates can fix bugs that caused the switch to become unresponsive.
Test Circuit with Lamp
If the switch still does not respond after a factory reset plug a lamp directly into the circuit outlet to verify the circuit has power. If no power check the breaker again. If power is present but the switch is dead it may be a hardware failure requiring replacement.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
After a power outage give all smart switches a few minutes to reconnect before troubleshooting. They often recover automatically.
Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.
- Switch firmware crashed / needs a power cycle
- Power outage corrupted the switch state
- WiFi credentials changed, so it can't reconnect
- Circuit breaker tripped
- Router assigned a new IP address
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
