Problem Description

Your Zooz switch in a 3-way setup does not work correctly — the light does not respond to one switch, toggles erratically, or the hub shows the wrong state when the companion switch is used. 3-way wiring configurations vary, and the Zooz must be installed in the correct box (with the line wire), the companion switch type parameter must be set, and the wiring must match one of Zooz's supported 3-way diagrams.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

A Zooz 3-way that misbehaves is almost always the wrong 3-way mode parameter for your wiring, or a traveler wired to the wrong terminal. In real installs the mode has to match whether you use a Zooz companion switch or a mechanical add-on. Set the 3-way mode parameter to match your companion, and confirm the traveler wiring.

Symptoms

  • One side works only
  • Flicker on toggle
  • State out of sync

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Wrong 3-way mode
  • Traveler wiring issue
  • Incorrect load type

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Cut breaker power before any switch-box wiring changes.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Identify your existing 3-way wiring configuration

3-way wiring comes in several configurations depending on where the power enters the circuit. The most common: power to the first switch box, with a 3-wire cable (traveler, traveler, common) running to the second box. The Zooz ZEN7x replaces one switch — ideally the one with the line (hot) wire. To identify: turn off the breaker, remove the existing switch, and note which wire is on the 'common' terminal (usually a different-colored screw — black or dark brass). The other two wires are travelers. Take a photo before disconnecting anything.

2

Wire the Zooz switch as the main switch

The Zooz switch must be installed in the box with the line (hot) wire. Connect: LINE (hot from panel) to the Zooz LINE terminal. LOAD (wire going to the light fixture) may or may not be in this box — if it is, connect to LOAD terminal. One traveler wire: connect to the Zooz TRAVELER terminal. The other traveler: connect to LOAD if the load wire is in the other box. Neutral (white): connect to the Zooz NEUTRAL terminal (ZEN7x models require or strongly recommend neutral). The companion switch remains a standard dumb toggle or on/off switch — not a dimmer or smart switch.

3

Verify the companion switch wiring

The companion switch (the dumb switch) connects the two traveler wires and the common wire. It should be wired exactly as the original switch was — one traveler on each traveler terminal, and the common wire on the common terminal. If the Zooz is in box 1 and the companion is in box 2: the load wire is typically in box 2, connected to the companion's common terminal. After wiring: turn on the breaker. Both switches should control the light. If only one works: the traveler wires are likely swapped — switch them at one of the boxes.

4

Set Parameter 8 for 3-way switch type

After wiring: configure the Zooz switch to recognize the 3-way setup. On ZEN7x models: Parameter 8 controls the switch type. Value 0: toggle (standard up/down toggle switch as companion). Value 1: momentary (spring-return switch as companion). Value 2: on/off (maintained rocker as companion). If the companion switch is a standard toggle: set Parameter 8 to 0. If using a momentary/spring-return switch: set to 1. Wrong setting causes erratic behavior — the light may toggle twice (on then immediately off) or not respond to the companion at all.

5

Test both switches and check state reporting

After wiring and parameter configuration: test by toggling each switch individually. Both should turn the light on and off. Then check the hub: toggle the companion switch — does the Zooz switch report the state change to the hub? On some 3-way configs: the Zooz detects the load state change when the companion switch toggles. On other configs (where the load wire is not at the Zooz box): the Zooz may not detect the change. If the state does not update when using the companion: the Zooz cannot monitor the load in this wiring configuration. You may need to swap which box the Zooz is in.

Quick Solutions

Set proper 3-way parameter
Verify traveler/common wiring
Retest both directions

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Use model-specific wiring diagrams instead of generic 3-way diagrams.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Wrong 3-way mode
  • Traveler wiring issue
  • Incorrect load type
