Overview

You are installing a Sensi thermostat and want to wire it correctly the first time. The keys to a clean Sensi install are turning off power, labeling your existing wires before removing the old thermostat, landing each wire in the matching terminal (including C on Touch models), and entering your wires accurately in the app's wire picker so it configures for your system.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

A clean Sensi install comes down to discipline at a few steps. Cut power at the furnace first, both to stay safe and to avoid shorting the 24V transformer at the terminals. Then, before you remove the old thermostat, photograph it and label each wire by the terminal it sits in, not by its color, because thermostat wire colors are not standardized and going by color is how wires end up in the wrong place. Land each labeled wire in the matching Sensi terminal, remembering that the Touch and Touch 2 require a C wire while the classic Sensi and Sensi Lite can run on batteries. The step people underestimate is the app's wire picker: it must reflect exactly what you landed and the correct system type, Conventional or Heat Pump, because that configuration is what tells the thermostat how to drive your equipment. Finish by testing Heat, Cool, and Fan, and on a heat pump confirm each mode runs the right way, which validates the O/B setting before you trust it.

What's Included

  • Replacing an old thermostat with a Sensi
  • Not sure which wire goes where
  • Need to know if you require a C wire
  • Setting up the Sensi app wire picker
  • Want to avoid damaging the HVAC during install
  • New Sensi will not power or control correctly
  • Unsure of your system type (conventional or heat pump)
  • First-time smart thermostat install

Got your materials ready? Here's what to check first.

Before You Start

  • Power left on during wiring
  • Wires not labeled before removing the old thermostat
  • Wrong wire landed in a terminal
  • No C wire on a Touch or Touch 2 model
  • System type set wrong in the wire picker
  • Loose wires not seated in the terminal clamps
  • R jumper needed but missing (single-transformer systems)
  • Wire picker not matching the actual wiring

Don't skip this step — it breaks everything if you do

Warning

Always cut power at the furnace before wiring; shorting R to C can blow the furnace fuse or damage the transformer. If you find unusual wiring or are unsure of your system type, consult an HVAC professional.

Installation Steps

1

Turn Off Power

At the furnace or air handler, turn off the power switch (the light-switch-looking control) and the breaker feeding the system. This protects you and prevents shorting the 24V transformer while you work at the terminals.

2

Photograph and Label the Old Wiring

Before removing anything, take a clear photo of the old thermostat's wiring, then label each wire with the sticker for its terminal letter (R, Rc, Rh, C, W, W2, Y, Y2, G, O/B). Do not go by wire color, which is not standardized; go by the terminal each wire is in. Note any spare wires tucked in the wall, especially a possible C.

3

Remove the Old Thermostat

Pull the old faceplate off and unscrew the old base from the wall, keeping the labeled wires threaded through the opening so they do not fall back into the wall. If the wires are loose, wrap them around a pencil so they cannot retract.

4

Mount the Sensi Base

Feed the wires through the Sensi base, level it on the wall, and screw it in place, using the included anchors for drywall. Seal the wire hole behind the base with putty or insulation to prevent drafts that skew the temperature reading.

5

Land Each Wire

Connect each labeled wire to the matching terminal on the Sensi base, pressing the terminal tab and inserting the stripped wire until the clamp holds it. On Touch and Touch 2 models a C wire is required; on classic Sensi and Sensi Lite a C wire is optional but recommended. Handle any needed R jumper per the instructions for single-transformer systems.

6

Attach the Faceplate and Power Up

Snap the thermostat onto the base, then restore power at the furnace switch and breaker. The screen should light up. On a meter, R to C should read 20 to 30 volts AC on hardwired models.

7

Complete the App Wire Picker

In the Sensi app, create or sign into your account, add the thermostat, and use the wire picker: check off exactly the wires you landed, and select your system type (Conventional or Heat Pump). This configuration is what tells the thermostat how to run your equipment, so it must match the wiring precisely.

8

Test Every Mode

Before finishing, test Heat (furnace fires and warms), Cool (AC runs and blows cold after the protection delay), and Fan (blower runs in On). On a heat pump, confirm Heat actually heats and Cool cools, which verifies the O/B reversing-valve setting. Correct any mode that runs wrong before relying on the thermostat.

Installation Tips

Turn off power at the furnace switch and breaker before starting
Label each wire by terminal before disconnecting the old thermostat
Land each wire in the matching Sensi terminal
Connect a C wire on Touch and Touch 2 models
Set the correct system type in the app wire picker
Seat each wire fully until the clamp grips
Add the required jumper if your system needs one
Enter wires in the picker exactly as landed

Still stuck? This is usually the deeper cause below.

Pro Tip

Label wires by their terminal letter, never by color, since thermostat wire colors are not standardized. A clear photo of the old wiring is the best insurance against a confusing install.
