Problem Description

Your Apple TV powers on but displays a black screen or no picture on your TV. The Apple TV status light may be on indicating it has power but nothing appears on screen. This can happen after changing TVs, updating software, or using a new HDMI cable.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

An Apple TV that's clearly on (light lit, maybe audio) but shows a black screen usually has an HDMI or resolution mismatch — the wrong input selected, a bad cable, or an output resolution the TV can't display, which leaves the screen blank. It's a display-handshake issue, not a dead device.

Confirm the TV is on the Apple TV's input, reseat or swap the HDMI cable, and try a different port. If a resolution change caused it, the Apple TV can cycle resolutions — hold the remote's Back/Menu and Volume Up together to step through until a picture appears, or unplug the HDMI to trigger auto-detection. Restart the Apple TV by unplugging it, power-cycle the TV, and update tvOS.

Symptoms

  • Apple TV powers on but black screen
  • No picture
  • TV shows no signal
  • Black after waking
  • Audio but no video
  • Black on the correct input
  • No picture after a resolution change
  • Blank screen

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Wrong TV input selected
  • HDMI cable loose/faulty
  • Resolution/format mismatch with the TV
  • HDMI port issue
  • Apple TV needs a restart
  • Resolution set higher than the TV supports
  • HDCP handshake failure
  • tvOS glitch

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not unplug the Apple TV during a software update as this can corrupt the system software and require a full restore via USB.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check TV Input

Use your TV remote to cycle through HDMI inputs. Make sure you have selected the HDMI port where the Apple TV is connected. Some TVs have 3 or 4 HDMI ports and it is easy to be on the wrong one.

2

Try a Different HDMI Cable

Replace your current HDMI cable with a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Older HDMI cables may not support 4K HDR or the bandwidth required by Apple TV 4K. A cable rated for HDMI 2.1 or at minimum HDMI 2.0 is recommended.

3

Reset Video Settings

On the Siri Remote press and hold the Back button and the TV button together for 6 seconds. The Apple TV will cycle through different resolutions. This forces it to try each resolution until it finds one your TV supports.

4

Force Low Resolution Boot

Unplug the Apple TV. Hold the Menu and Volume Down buttons on the remote while plugging it back in. Keep holding for about 10 seconds. The Apple TV will boot in a safe low resolution mode. From there you can change video settings to match your TV.

5

Try Different HDMI Port

Move the HDMI cable to a different port on your TV. Some TV HDMI ports support 4K HDR while others are limited to 1080p. Port 1 or the one labeled ARC or eARC usually has the best compatibility.

Quick Solutions

Select the correct HDMI input
Reseat or replace the HDMI cable
Cycle resolutions (hold Back/Menu + Volume Up) or unplug HDMI to reset
Try a different HDMI port
Restart the Apple TV (unplug ~10s)
Set a resolution the TV supports
Power-cycle the TV and Apple TV
Update tvOS

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Label your HDMI cables and ports so you always know which input to select on your TV for the Apple TV.

Real-World Insight

A black screen after connecting is almost always the IR cut filter stuck mid-position — a power cycle resets the mechanical component in under a minute.

What Usually Goes Wrong
