- Touch surface works but buttons do not
- Remote paired but then disconnects
- Siri button does not activate
- Remote charges but still unresponsive
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Remote battery completely drained
- Remote lost Bluetooth pairing
- Remote needs firmware update
- Too far from Apple TV during pairing
- Multiple Apple TVs causing pairing conflict
- Hardware issue with remote
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Avoid pairing the remote near multiple Apple TVs as it may pair to the wrong unit. Power off other Apple TVs during pairing if needed.

Step-by-Step Solution
Charge the Remote
Connect the Siri Remote to a Lightning or USB-C cable depending on the model. Charge for at least 30 minutes before testing. A completely dead remote cannot be paired. The remote does not have a charging indicator light so just wait the full 30 minutes.
Restart Apple TV Without Remote
Unplug the Apple TV from power. Wait 10 seconds and plug it back in. During boot the Apple TV will attempt to reconnect with the last paired remote. Keep the remote within a few feet of the Apple TV during this process.
Re-pair the Remote
Hold the Back button and Volume Up button together for 5 seconds. You should see a pairing notification on the Apple TV screen. If not move closer to the Apple TV and try again. Only one Siri Remote can be actively paired at a time.
Use iPhone as Remote
If the physical remote is dead open Control Center on your iPhone. Tap the Apple TV Remote icon. Select your Apple TV from the list. You can now navigate the Apple TV to check settings and initiate a new remote pairing.
Reset the Remote
Press and hold the TV button and Volume Down together for 5 seconds. Release when the status light on the Apple TV flashes. Wait 10 seconds then hold the Back and Volume Up to re-pair. This fully resets the Bluetooth connection.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If pairing fails after multiple attempts, the device may still be registered to a previous account — factory-reset it before trying to add it to a new one.
Charge your Siri Remote monthly even if you do not use it often. A completely dead battery takes longer to recover than a partially drained one.
Pairing failures almost always come down to distance during the initial handshake — manufacturers seriously understate how close you actually need to be.
