Why Does My Levoit Air Purifier Keep Showing Red Air Quality When Air Is Clean

Problem Description

Your Levoit air purifier constantly shows red or orange air quality even in a clean room with no obvious source of pollution. The fan runs on high nonstop. You know the air is fine but the sensor disagrees. The air quality sensor is likely dirty giving false high readings making the purifier work harder than needed and wearing out the filter faster.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

A Levoit that shows red air quality in a room you know is clean - and runs the fan flat out because of it - almost always has a dirty laser sensor. Over months of pulling household air across the optics, fine dust accumulates and scatters the laser, so the sensor reports far more particles than are actually there. The result is a purifier working overtime and burning through filter life for no reason. Cleaning the sensor gently with a dry cotton swab (and blowing compressed air through its intake) is the fix in the large majority of these cases, and it's worth doing periodically as maintenance.

Two things make false-red worse or mimic it. Placement against a wall starves the sensor's airflow and can skew readings, so give the unit some clearance.
