Got your materials ready? Here's what to check first.
Before You Start
- Attic or wall access to route 60 foot cables
- Stud finder and drill with 1/2 inch paddle bit
- TV or monitor with HDMI input near router
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi SSID for Protect app remote view
- Home internet upload speed of 2 Mbps or more

Don't skip this step — it breaks everything if you do
Never run the 12V DC power cable through the same hole as a 120V mains line. Keep low-voltage and mains wiring separated per NEC 725.136 to prevent noise and code issues.

Installation Steps
Plan Camera Locations
Walk your property with the 60-foot cable length in mind and mark each camera spot on painters tape. Prioritize front door, garage, driveway, and back door. Aim for 8 to 10 feet off the ground, pointed slightly downward, with a power source and attic cable route within 60 feet of where the DVR will sit. Avoid pointing at streetlights or the sun.

$168.71Mount the Cameras
Use the included drill template to mark screw holes on the wall or eave. Drill pilot holes with a 3/32 inch bit for wood or use the included plastic anchors for stucco and brick. Screw the bracket tight, pass the pigtail through a 1/2 inch hole drilled into the soffit or wall, then clip the camera to the bracket and hand-tighten the three adjustment knobs. Do not fully aim yet.
Run Cables to the DVR
Feed each BNC plus power cable through the attic or along the soffit, down an interior wall, and to the room where the DVR will live. Keep cables out of direct contact with insulation and zip-tie loosely to existing wiring runs. Leave a 3-foot service loop at the DVR end. The yellow BNC end plugs into a numbered video input on the rear of the DVR.
Connect DVR Power, HDMI, and Mouse
Plug the multi-port 12V DC brick into a surge-protected outlet and plug each red power plug into its matching red cable end. Connect the HDMI cable from the DVR to your TV or monitor and set the TV to that HDMI input. Plug the USB mouse into the DVR rear USB port. Finally connect the DVR ethernet port to your router with the included ethernet cable.
Power Up and Pair the App
Press the DVR power switch. The first-boot wizard launches automatically. Set time zone, create an 8-character admin password, and link a Night Owl account (required for Forgot Password recovery). Enable motion detection on all channels. On your phone install Night Owl Protect, sign in with the same account, and the DVR appears automatically. Aim each camera using the phone live view.
Installation Tips
Still stuck? This is usually the deeper cause below.
After aiming, firmly tighten each of the three bracket knobs in order (base, swivel, tilt). Skipping one causes cameras to slowly droop over weeks until they point at the ground.
