- iPhone Focus mode or Do Not Disturb is on
- Android battery optimization killing Protect
- App notifications toggled off in phone settings
Problem Description
Your Night Owl DVR records motion clips correctly and live view works, but push notifications never reach your phone — or arrive hours late. On iOS this is almost always iPhone Focus mode or Do Not Disturb silencing the app. On Android it is typically aggressive battery optimization killing the Night Owl Protect background service. The app also warns that notification setting changes take up to 5 minutes to propagate.
Symptoms
- Motion events record on DVR but no phone alert
- Push notifications stopped after iOS or app update
- Alerts arrive hours late in a sudden batch
- Notifications work for one family member not another
- Banner never appears even with app open
- Push silently delivered with no sound or vibration
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- iPhone Focus mode or Do Not Disturb is on
- Android battery optimization killing Protect
- App notifications toggled off in phone settings
- Push Notifications disabled in Night Owl app
- Motion detection sensitivity set too low on DVR
- Account signed in on too many phones at once
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not sign into one Night Owl account on more than 3 phones. Beyond that, push delivery becomes unreliable and older phones will randomly intercept alerts.
Tools & Requirements
Step-by-Step Solution
Enable iPhone Notifications for Protect
On iPhone open Settings, scroll to Night Owl Protect, and tap it. Confirm Allow Notifications is ON. Enable Banners, Sounds, and Badges. Open Settings, Focus, and tap each Focus profile (Do Not Disturb, Work, Sleep). Under Allowed Notifications, add Night Owl Protect to the allowed apps list so its alerts bypass Focus silencing. Wait 5 minutes per Night Owl's support note for the change to propagate.
Disable Android Battery Optimization for Protect
On Android open Settings, Apps, Night Owl Protect. Tap Battery and set Battery Usage to Unrestricted (Samsung calls this Not Optimized; Google Pixel calls it Unrestricted). Under Notifications ensure Show Notifications is ON and all channels (Motion, Ring, System) are enabled. Some Samsung phones also require Settings, Battery and Device Care, Background Usage Limits — make sure Protect is not listed under Sleeping Apps or Deep Sleeping Apps.
Re-Enable Push Inside Night Owl Protect
Open Night Owl Protect on your phone. Tap your device from the list, then Device Settings, then Notifications (or Push). Confirm the master Push Notifications toggle is on. For each camera, confirm Motion and Doorbell Press toggles are on. Tap Save. Then open Profile, tap your account, and confirm Notifications at the account level. Missing one of these switches silently breaks alerts even if phone settings are perfect.
Raise DVR Motion Sensitivity
Low sensitivity means the DVR never flags an event in the first place, so no push is ever sent. Right click on the DVR and open Main Menu, Event, then Motion Detection. Select each channel, raise Sensitivity to 5 or 6, and tap Area Settings to paint the full frame red. Apply changes. A real walk-through test should now log a motion event on the DVR timeline AND send a push within 10 seconds.
Sign Out Unused Phones From Your Account
Night Owl limits how many simultaneous push targets an account supports. Old or sold phones still registered for pushes can steal notifications from your current phone. In Night Owl Protect, open Profile, Account, Device Management, and remove any phone you no longer use. Force close the app on your current phone and reopen to re-register. Walk by a camera to test.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
Notification delays almost always return after a major iOS or Android update — background app refresh gets reset to restricted on every major OS version.
Notification changes take up to 5 minutes to propagate per Night Owl's support docs. Do not retest immediately after each change — wait the full 5 minutes before calling it broken.
Notification delays over 2 minutes are almost never the device's fault — background app restrictions quietly re-enable themselves after every OS update.
- iPhone Focus mode or Do Not Disturb is on
- Android battery optimization killing Protect
- App notifications toggled off in phone settings
- Push Notifications disabled in Night Owl app
- Motion detection sensitivity set too low on DVR
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
