Problem Description

Your Arlo camera battery won't charge when connected to the charging cable. The charging cable and USB power adapter must meet Arlo's specifications. Dirty charging contacts on the camera or a damaged cable are common causes. Some Arlo models charge via magnetic cable that attaches to contacts on the back or bottom of the camera.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Arlo cameras use proprietary magnetic charging connectors and this is the number one hardware complaint — the magnetic pins get dirty, corroded, or misaligned and the camera sits on the charger showing zero progress. On the Pro 3 and Pro 4, the charging contacts are on the bottom of the camera body. Even a thin layer of dust or pollen blocks the connection. Clean the contacts with a dry microfiber cloth or a pencil eraser. If the camera still does not charge, try a different Arlo charging cable because the magnetic end weakens over time and stops making solid contact. Arlo batteries take about 5 hours for a full charge from empty via the USB cable, but the magnetic outdoor charging cable takes closer to 7 hours because of voltage drop over the longer run.

Symptoms

  • Camera shows offline in the app
  • Live view fails to load or times out
  • Motion detection not triggering alerts
  • Night vision appears too dark or washed out
  • Recorded clips are missing or corrupted
  • Two-way audio not working
  • Camera keeps disconnecting from WiFi

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Weak WiFi signal at camera location
  • Power supply interrupted or adapter failing
  • Motion sensitivity set too low or too high
  • Cloud storage subscription expired
  • Camera firmware outdated
  • Infrared sensors blocked or dirty
  • Bandwidth insufficient for multiple cameras

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Security cameras should be installed at least 8 feet high to prevent tampering. Check local laws regarding recording audio and video. Never aim cameras at neighboring private property. Outdoor cameras should be rated IP65 or higher for weather resistance.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check the charging cable and adapter

Use the original Arlo magnetic charging cable and adapter. Third-party cables often do not provide the correct voltage or magnetic alignment for proper charging. The magnetic tip should snap firmly onto the charging port on the camera. If it feels loose or does not click, the magnets may have weakened or debris is on the contacts. Clean the camera charging port and cable tip with a dry cloth.

Look for the charging LED indicator

When properly charging, the Arlo camera shows an LED near the charging port — solid amber means charging, solid green means fully charged. If there is no LED at all when the cable is connected, the issue is with the cable, adapter, or power source. Try a different wall outlet. If the LED blinks, the camera temperature may be too hot or too cold for safe charging — bring it indoors.

3

Check battery temperature

Arlo cameras will not charge if the battery temperature is outside the safe range (roughly 32-113°F / 0-45°C). If the camera has been in direct sun on a hot day or outdoors in freezing weather, bring it inside and let it reach room temperature before attempting to charge. This is a safety feature to prevent lithium battery damage.

4

Verify the battery is not end-of-life

Lithium batteries degrade over time. After 2-3 years of regular charge cycles, the battery may hold significantly less charge or fail to charge at all. In the Arlo app, check the battery health indicator if available. If the camera is several years old and the battery no longer charges past 50-60% or drains unusually fast, the battery is degrading. Contact Arlo support for a replacement battery if your model has a removable battery.

5

Try a hard reset if the camera is unresponsive

If the camera shows no charging LED and does not appear in the app, press and hold the sync button on the camera for 15-20 seconds. This forces a hardware reset. Then connect the charger. If the LED appears, the camera processor was in a stuck state preventing charging. Wait for it to charge to at least 10% before attempting to use it.

Quick Solutions

Check and secure power connections
Improve WiFi signal with extender or repositioning
Power cycle the camera for 30 seconds
Adjust motion detection zones and sensitivity
Clean lens and infrared sensors
Update firmware and check storage subscription

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If drain continues after replacing batteries, check the event history — a stuck-open sensor or rapid polling loop burns through batteries in days.

Pro Tip

Set up activity zones to monitor only the areas that matter like your front porch and driveway and exclude the street. This dramatically reduces false alerts while ensuring you never miss an actual event at your property.

Real-World Insight

App battery indicators run 15–20% behind actual charge levels — by the time the low warning appears, the device has been struggling for days.
