Problem Description

Your Arlo camera records clear video during the day but nighttime footage is blurry grainy or washed out. Faces and license plates are unreadable. Night vision looks like a white fog. This is a common complaint because Arlo default night vision settings are not optimized for most installations.

Symptoms

  • Night video is grainy and pixelated
  • Faces unrecognizable in night recordings
  • Night vision looks washed out or foggy
  • Infrared glare creates white spots
  • Video quality fine during day terrible at night
  • Motion clips too dark to see anything useful

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • IR LEDs reflecting off nearby wall or surface
  • Camera pointed at reflective surface like glass
  • Night vision set to auto instead of always on
  • Video quality set to lower resolution to save battery
  • Lens dirty with water spots or condensation
  • Camera firmware not optimized for current lighting

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Setting highest resolution on battery cameras reduces battery life by 30 to 50 percent. If battery drain is a concern use a solar panel accessory.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Clean the Lens

Wipe the camera lens with a soft dry microfiber cloth. Outdoor cameras accumulate water spots dust and pollen that scatter the infrared light making night video appear foggy. A clean lens immediately improves clarity.

2

Fix IR Reflection

If the camera is mounted near a wall eave or window frame the infrared LEDs bounce back into the lens creating a white glare. Move the camera at least 6 inches away from any surface. If mounted under an eave angle it downward so IR light does not reflect off the overhang.

3

Set Max Resolution

In Arlo app go to camera Settings then Video Settings. Set resolution to highest available like 2K or 4K. Battery cameras default to lower resolution to save battery. Higher resolution means shorter battery life but dramatically better night detail.

4

Avoid Glass Windows

Never point an Arlo camera through a glass window at night. The IR LEDs reflect off the glass creating a bright white glare that washes out the entire image. If monitoring through glass disable night vision and add an external light source instead.

5

Add External Light

For the best night video add a motion-activated floodlight near the camera. Color night vision with visible light produces far better footage than infrared. Arlo cameras with spotlight built in should have spotlight enabled in settings for motion events.

Quick Solutions

Reposition camera away from reflective surfaces
Clean lens with soft dry cloth
Set video quality to highest resolution
Adjust IR LED brightness if available
Enable HDR mode for mixed lighting
Add external IR illuminator for better coverage

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

Camera issues that start suddenly almost always trace back to an upload bandwidth drop — run a speed test before assuming hardware failure.

Pro Tip

For license plate capture at night position the camera at a 30-degree angle to the road not straight on. Head-on camera angles get blinded by headlights making plates unreadable.

Real-World Insight

Live view problems that start suddenly usually trace back to an upload speed drop — the camera itself is fine, the bandwidth path to the cloud isn't.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • IR LEDs reflecting off nearby wall or surface
  • Camera pointed at reflective surface like glass
  • Night vision set to auto instead of always on
