Problem Description

Your Arlo camera shows Error 4402 which means the camera failed to sync or pair with the base station or SmartHub. Syncing is the process where the camera establishes a secure wireless connection with the base station to transmit video and receive commands. Error 4402 means this pairing handshake failed. The camera cannot communicate with the base station and therefore cannot stream video, detect motion, or upload recordings. This error commonly occurs during initial setup, after replacing batteries, after a base station reboot, or when adding a camera to a new base station.

Symptoms

  • Arlo app shows Error 4402 camera sync failed during setup
  • Camera LED blinks blue rapidly during sync but never turns solid
  • Pressing sync button on base station and camera does not pair them
  • Camera was previously synced but lost connection and will not resync
  • Camera shows offline in Arlo app after base station reboot
  • Multiple sync attempts all fail with 4402 error

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Camera too far from base station during sync process
  • Base station already has maximum number of cameras connected
  • Camera was not fully reset before attempting to sync to new base station
  • Base station sync mode timed out before camera responded
  • Wireless interference from other 2.4GHz devices near the base station
  • Camera firmware and base station firmware version mismatch

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

After a factory reset of the camera all local settings, motion zones, and schedules for that camera are erased. You will need to reconfigure activity zones, sensitivity settings, and any camera-specific rules after re-pairing. Cloud recordings tied to your Arlo account are not affected.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Position Camera Next to Base Station

During the sync process the camera and base station need to be very close together. Place the camera within 3 feet of the base station on the same table or surface. Do not try to sync with the camera at its permanent outdoor location. The initial pairing requires a strong signal. After successful sync you can move the camera to its permanent position and it will maintain the connection at longer range.

2

Press Sync Buttons in Correct Order

Press the sync button on the base station first. The LED will blink. You have 2 minutes to press the sync button on the camera. Press and hold the sync button on the camera for about 2 seconds until the LED starts blinking blue. The camera LED will cycle through patterns for 1 to 2 minutes as it pairs. When successful the camera LED will turn solid blue briefly then go to normal operation. If the LED turns amber or stops blinking sync failed.

3

Check Camera Capacity on Base Station

Arlo base stations have camera limits. The original base station supports 5 cameras. The SmartHub supports 15 cameras. Arlo Pro 3 base station supports 5 cameras. In the Arlo app go to Settings then My Devices and count the cameras under your base station. If you are at the maximum remove a camera you no longer use before adding the new one. You cannot exceed the camera limit.

4

Factory Reset Camera Before Syncing

If the camera was previously paired to a different base station it must be reset before it can sync to a new one. Press and hold the sync button on the camera for 15 to 20 seconds until the LED blinks amber rapidly then release. The camera is now in factory default state ready to pair. If the camera does not have a physical sync button remove the battery, wait 10 seconds, reinsert, and the camera will enter pairing mode automatically.

5

Reduce Wireless Interference

Arlo cameras communicate with the base station on 2.4GHz wireless. If your base station is near a WiFi router, microwave, baby monitor, or other 2.4GHz devices the interference can prevent sync. Move the base station at least 3 feet from your WiFi router and away from other wireless devices. Try the sync in a different room away from interference sources. After successful pairing move the base station back to its normal location.

Quick Solutions

Move camera within 3 feet of base station for sync
Remove a camera from the base station if at maximum capacity
Reset the camera before syncing to a new base station
Press sync button on base station first then camera within 2 minutes
Reduce wireless interference by moving other 2.4GHz devices
Reboot base station before attempting sync

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If pairing fails after multiple attempts, the device may still be registered to a previous account — factory-reset it before trying to add it to a new one.

Pro Tip

If you are syncing multiple cameras to a new base station add them one at a time. Wait for each camera to fully sync and come online in the Arlo app before starting the sync process for the next camera. Adding multiple cameras simultaneously can cause conflicts.

Real-World Insight

Pairing failures almost always come down to distance during the initial handshake — manufacturers seriously understate how close you actually need to be.

What Usually Goes Wrong

  • Base station already has maximum number of cameras connected
  • Camera was not fully reset before attempting to sync
  • Base station sync mode timed out before camera responded
