Problem Description

You want to use your Arlo camera with Apple HomeKit Secure Video (HKSV) for local processing, iCloud storage, and Apple Home integration. Arlo added official HomeKit Secure Video support for select camera models through firmware updates. When configured, HomeKit Secure Video processes motion detection locally on your Apple Home Hub (Apple TV, HomePod, or iPad), stores recordings in iCloud (using your iCloud+ storage plan), and lets you view footage in the Apple Home app. However, enabling HKSV disables some Arlo-native features, and not all Arlo cameras support it.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Arlo HomeKit Secure Video is a compelling option for Apple-ecosystem users who want local video processing and iCloud storage without an Arlo Smart subscription. However, enabling HKSV effectively replaces Arlo cloud intelligence with Apple on-device intelligence. Arlo Smart person detection is generally more accurate than Apple HKSV detection as of 2026, but HKSV has the privacy advantage of processing everything locally. Users who switch from Arlo Smart to HKSV often notice more false notifications initially because Apple detection is tuned more conservatively. The iCloud+ plan requirement is the hidden cost — the 200GB plan at $2.99/month for up to 5 cameras is comparable to Arlo Smart pricing.

Symptoms

  • Arlo camera appears in HomeKit but shows no video stream
  • Cannot view Arlo camera feed in Apple Home app
  • HomeKit Secure Video option not available for Arlo cameras
  • Arlo shows as motion sensor only in HomeKit not as camera
  • Want Arlo recordings saved to iCloud instead of Arlo cloud subscription

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Arlo supports basic HomeKit but NOT HomeKit Secure Video HKSV
  • HKSV requires specific video encoding that Arlo does not provide natively
  • Arlo business model relies on Arlo Smart cloud subscription for recordings
  • Native HomeKit integration is limited to motion detection triggers only
  • Apple certification for HKSV requires hardware changes Arlo has not made

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Using Scrypted or Starling means your Arlo credentials are stored on that device. Ensure your bridge device is secured. Arlo does not officially support these third-party integrations.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check if your Arlo camera model supports HomeKit Secure Video

Only certain Arlo cameras support HKSV: the Arlo Pro 3, Arlo Pro 4, Arlo Ultra, Arlo Ultra 2, Arlo Essential (2nd Gen WiFi model), and Arlo Essential Indoor Camera. The original Arlo Pro, Pro 2, Arlo Baby, and Arlo Go do NOT support HKSV. The Arlo Essential 1st Gen (the one requiring a SmartHub) does not support it either. Check your camera model in the Arlo app under Device Settings — the model number is listed there. If your camera is not on the supported list, you cannot add it to HomeKit natively, though third-party bridges like Homebridge or Scrypted can provide limited HomeKit integration.

Update firmware and enable HomeKit in the Arlo app

Update your Arlo camera to the latest firmware through the Arlo app (Settings, My Devices, select camera, Firmware). After updating, go to the camera settings in the Arlo app and look for a HomeKit option or Setup HomeKit prompt. If you do not see it, your camera may need a specific firmware version — check the Arlo support page for your model. When you tap the HomeKit setup option, the Arlo app will generate a HomeKit pairing code or QR code. You will scan this in the Apple Home app to add the camera.

3

Add the camera to Apple Home

Open the Apple Home app on your iPhone. Tap +, then Add Accessory. Scan the HomeKit code shown in the Arlo app (or enter it manually). The Home app will detect the camera and ask you to assign it to a room. You need an Apple Home Hub (Apple TV 4K, HomePod, or HomePod mini) on the same network for HomeKit Secure Video to work — without a hub, the camera can appear in Home but will not record or process motion locally. The pairing process takes 1-2 minutes. After pairing, the camera will appear in both the Arlo app and the Apple Home app.

4

Configure HomeKit Secure Video recording settings

After adding the camera to Home, tap it in the Home app and go to its settings. Under Recording Options, choose when to record: When Home (only when someone is home), When Away (only when nobody is home), or Always. Configure what to detect: People, Animals, Vehicles, and Packages. These classifications are processed locally on your Home Hub — not sent to Apple or Arlo servers. HKSV recordings are stored in iCloud and require an iCloud+ plan: the 50GB plan supports 1 camera, 200GB supports up to 5, and 2TB supports unlimited cameras. The recordings do not count against your iCloud storage quota.

5

Understand what changes when HKSV is enabled

Enabling HomeKit Secure Video moves recording control from Arlo servers to Apple. This means: Arlo Smart notifications (person/vehicle/package detection through Arlo AI) are replaced by Apple on-device detection. Arlo activity zones are replaced by HomeKit activity zones (configured in the Home app). Arlo cloud recordings stop — all recordings go to iCloud. The Arlo app still provides live view and camera settings, but the recording history moves to the Home app. You can still arm/disarm through the Arlo app, but recording behavior is controlled by HomeKit modes. If you want Arlo Smart features back, you can disable HKSV and revert to Arlo cloud recording.

6

Fix common HKSV setup issues

If the camera shows No Response in the Home app: check that your Apple Home Hub is online and on the same network. If pairing fails with Unable to Add Accessory: factory reset the camera (hold the sync button for 15 seconds), then try pairing again — HomeKit pairing can fail if the camera was previously paired to a different Apple Home. If recordings are missing: verify your iCloud+ plan has camera slots available and that the Home Hub is powered on (it processes video). If the camera shows in Home but with no video: the Home Hub may not have enough processing power — Apple TV 4K (2nd gen or later) works best. Older Apple TV HD units struggle with multiple HKSV cameras.

Quick Solutions

Understand Arlo HomeKit Limitations
Add Arlo to HomeKit for Basic Features
Option 1: Use Scrypted for HKSV
Option 2: Starling Home Hub

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

Camera issues that start suddenly almost always trace back to an upload bandwidth drop — run a speed test before assuming hardware failure.

Pro Tip

Scrypted requires processing power to re-encode video. A Raspberry Pi 4 with 4GB RAM handles 2-3 cameras. For more cameras or 4K streams use a Mac Mini or mini PC with Intel Quick Sync.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
