Problem Description

Your Blink camera won't connect to the Sync Module during setup or has lost its connection. The Sync Module LED indicates its status: solid blue = powered on, solid green = internet connected, blinking blue = in setup mode. The camera must be within WiFi range of the Sync Module (about 100 feet outdoors, less through walls).

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Blink cameras form a small local network around the Sync Module, so a camera that won't connect is almost always a range or setup-state issue. The camera needs to be within the module's wireless reach - roughly 100 feet outdoors and less through walls - and during setup the Sync Module has to be in add mode, shown by a blinking blue LED. Pair the camera close to the module and then mount it in its final spot; a camera that connects fine on the bench but drops once installed is simply too far or has too many walls in the way.

The module's LED colors are your diagnostic map: solid blue means powered, solid green means internet connected, and blinking blue means setup mode. If the module isn't showing green, the problem is upstream (the module's own WiFi) rather than the camera. For battery cameras, low power is a common cause of a flaky camera-to-module link, so fresh AA lithium batteries help. And a camera that was previously used on another account or Sync Module needs to be removed from that first, since it can't join a new module while still bound to the old one. Keeping firmware current cleans up the rest.

Symptoms

  • Camera won't connect to the Sync Module during setup
  • Camera lost its connection to the module
  • Camera offline while the Sync Module is online
  • Add-device fails to find the camera
  • Camera only connects when near the module
  • Live view fails on that camera
  • Motion events stop from that camera
  • Connection drops repeatedly

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Camera out of range of the Sync Module (~100 ft, less through walls)
  • Sync Module not in setup mode (blinking blue) during add
  • Weak signal between camera and module
  • Battery camera's 2 AA lithium cells low
  • Camera still linked to a previous Sync Module/account
  • Obstructions/interference between camera and module
  • Sync Module itself offline (no green LED)
  • Camera firmware needs updating

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Security cameras should be installed at least 8 feet high to prevent tampering. Check local laws regarding recording audio and video. Never aim cameras at neighboring private property. Outdoor cameras should be rated IP65 or higher for weather resistance.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check Sync Module LED status

The Blink Sync Module 2 has a front LED. Solid blue = connected to internet and Blink cloud. Blinking blue = attempting to connect. Solid green = connected to local network but not Blink cloud. Red = not connected. No light = no power. The LED tells you exactly where the connection breaks down — power, local network, or cloud.

2

Verify internet and power connections

Check that the Sync Module USB cable is firmly plugged into both the module and the power adapter. Check that the power adapter is plugged into a working outlet. If using Ethernet, verify the Ethernet cable is connected to both the Sync Module and your router. If using WiFi, check that your 2.4GHz WiFi network is active. The Sync Module only supports 2.4GHz WiFi.

3

Restart the Sync Module

Unplug the Sync Module power for 15 seconds. Plug it back in. Wait 2-3 minutes for it to boot and connect. The LED should turn solid blue. After reconnection, all cameras linked to this Sync Module should come back online within 1-2 minutes. Check the Blink app to verify all cameras are showing as online.

4

Reconnect WiFi after network changes

If you changed your WiFi password, SSID, or replaced the router, the Sync Module cannot reconnect. In the Blink app, go to Sync Module > Settings > Change WiFi. Follow the prompts to connect the Sync Module to your updated WiFi network. You need to be near the Sync Module during this process.

5

Factory reset the Sync Module

If the Sync Module remains unresponsive: press and hold the Reset button on the side of the module with a paperclip until the LED turns red. Release. The module resets to factory defaults. In the Blink app, delete the old Sync Module entry and add it as new (scan the QR code on the bottom). Reconnect to WiFi. All cameras previously linked to this Sync Module need to be re-added.

Quick Solutions

Bring the camera within range of the Sync Module, then mount it
Put the Sync Module in setup mode (blinking blue) to add a camera
Reduce distance/obstructions between camera and module
Replace battery cameras' 2 AA lithium batteries
Remove the camera from any old account/module first
Reposition the module more centrally to the cameras
Confirm the Sync Module is online (solid green LED)
Update the camera and Sync Module firmware

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If pairing fails after multiple attempts, the device may still be registered to a previous account — factory-reset it before trying to add it to a new one.

Pro Tip

Set up activity zones to monitor only the areas that matter like your front porch and driveway and exclude the street. This dramatically reduces false alerts while ensuring you never miss an actual event at your property.

Real-World Insight

Pairing failures almost always come down to distance during the initial handshake — manufacturers seriously understate how close you actually need to be.
