Problem Description

Your Blink camera is not recording motion events — the camera appears online in the Blink app but no motion clips are being saved and no notifications are sent. Blink cameras (Mini, Indoor, Outdoor, XT2, Video Doorbell) use passive infrared (PIR) sensors to detect motion based on heat signatures. Recording requires the system to be Armed in the Blink app. Blink cameras have a retrigger time — a cooldown period between recordings — that causes missed events if set too long. Since January 2024, cloud recording and most smart detection features require an active Blink Subscription Plan or Blink Plus Plan.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

The two most common Blink support issues are missed recordings due to retrigger time (users do not realize the camera has a cooldown) and cloud recording loss after the subscription requirement took effect in 2024. Blink changed from free cloud storage to requiring a paid plan, which caught many existing users off guard. The retrigger time setting is buried in individual camera settings and most users never change it from the 30-second default, which means cameras routinely miss the second person in a group or a delivery driver who arrives within 30 seconds of triggering the first clip.

Symptoms

  • Blink camera shows online but no motion clips appear in the app
  • Motion notifications stopped — no alerts on phone
  • Camera records some events but misses obvious motion like people walking by
  • Blink app shows armed but clip list is empty
  • Motion events recorded as thumbnails only — no video clips
  • Live view works but recordings do not save
  • Blink Outdoor camera records during day but not at night
  • Camera stopped recording after Blink subscription expired

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • System is set to Disarmed — Blink only records when Armed
  • Retrigger time set too high — camera ignores motion during cooldown between clips
  • Blink Subscription Plan expired — cloud recording requires active subscription since Jan 2024
  • Motion detection sensitivity set too low to detect the motion at that distance
  • Activity zones excluding the area where motion is occurring
  • Sync Module offline or disconnected from WiFi
  • Camera battery too low to power the PIR sensor and WiFi radio simultaneously
  • PIR sensor blocked by glass — Blink PIR cannot detect through windows

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Blink PIR sensors cannot detect motion through glass. If you place a Blink Indoor camera in a window pointing outside, it will not record outdoor motion. The PIR sensor needs direct exposure to heat signatures. For window monitoring, use a Blink Mini which uses pixel-based motion detection instead of PIR — but it requires USB power and works better for indoor use.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Verify the Blink system is Armed

Open the Blink app and check the system status at the bottom of the home screen. If it shows Disarmed, no cameras will record motion. Tap the running person icon to Arm the system. You can arm individual cameras or the entire system. When armed, each camera thumbnail will show a blue running person icon. Common mistake: users disarm the system to do yard work or let the dog out and forget to re-arm. You can set a schedule in the Blink app to auto-arm at specific times — go to the system settings and tap Schedule to configure this.

2

Check and reduce the retrigger time

Retrigger time is the cooldown period between motion clips. During retrigger, the camera ignores all motion. Open camera settings and find Retrigger Time — the default is 30 seconds on most Blink cameras. This means after recording one 5-30 second clip, the camera will not record again for 30 seconds. For busy areas like a front door, reduce retrigger to 10 seconds (the minimum). This is the single most common reason Blink cameras miss motion events — the camera is in its cooldown window when the next person walks by. Each Blink camera has its own retrigger setting, so check all cameras individually.

3

Verify Blink subscription status

Since January 2024, Blink cameras without an active subscription can only save thumbnail snapshots — no video clips. Open the Blink app, go to Account, then Subscription. Verify your plan is active. Blink Basic covers one camera ($3/month), Blink Plus covers all cameras on the account ($10/month). If your subscription lapsed, existing clips are deleted after a grace period. You can also use Blink cameras with local storage by inserting a USB drive into the Sync Module 2 — this works without a subscription but only saves clips locally, not to the cloud. For the Blink Mini, local storage requires a Sync Module 2 connection.

4

Adjust motion sensitivity and activity zones

Open camera settings and set Sensitivity to 5-7 for outdoor cameras. Lower values miss people at distance; higher values trigger on trees and cars. For the Blink Video Doorbell, sensitivity of 5-6 works well for people approaching the door without triggering on street traffic. Next check Activity Zones — these define which areas of the camera view trigger recording. Make sure the zone covers the full path where people walk. Blink PIR sensors detect motion best when the subject moves across the field of view (left to right) rather than directly toward the camera. If your camera faces a walkway head-on, angle it 15-20 degrees to improve detection.

5

Check Sync Module status and WiFi connection

All Blink cameras (except Blink Mini when used standalone) require a Sync Module to relay commands and manage recordings. Open the Blink app and check the Sync Module status — it should show Online with a green icon. If it shows Offline, unplug the Sync Module from power, wait 15 seconds, and plug it back in. The Sync Module connects to your 2.4GHz WiFi network — it does not support 5GHz. Check your router to make sure the 2.4GHz band is active. If the Sync Module repeatedly goes offline, move it closer to the router. The Sync Module should be within 100 feet of the cameras and within 30 feet of the router for reliable operation.

Replace camera batteries if low

Blink Outdoor and XT2 cameras use 2 AA 1.5V lithium batteries (not alkaline). Check battery level in the Blink app under camera settings. Blink reports OK, Medium, or Low. At Low, the camera may still show as online but fail to record motion clips because the PIR sensor and WiFi radio draw too much current simultaneously. Replace both batteries at the same time with fresh Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries. Do not use rechargeable batteries — their 1.2V output is below the required threshold. Blink Mini and Blink Mini 2 are USB-powered and do not have batteries — check the USB cable and power adapter if they stop recording.

Fix night recording and IR issues

If the camera records during the day but not at night, the infrared illumination or night vision setting may be off. Open camera settings and confirm Night Vision is set to Auto (not Off). The IR illuminator has a range of about 20 feet — motion beyond that range will not be visible at night even if detected. For the Blink Outdoor camera, the IR LEDs are around the lens ring — check that no spider webs or dirt cover them. A known problem: the Blink Outdoor records a burst of IR-illuminated clips at dusk as insects fly near the IR LEDs, draining the battery, and then has no power left for actual nighttime events. Reduce sensitivity by 1-2 points at dusk hours or use activity zones to exclude the area directly in front of the camera where bugs gather.

Quick Solutions

Arm the Blink system and confirm each camera shows the running person icon
Reduce retrigger time to 10 seconds (minimum) to avoid missing consecutive events
Renew Blink Subscription Plan for cloud recording access
Increase motion sensitivity to 5-7 out of 10 for outdoor cameras
Reconfigure activity zones to include the full detection area
Power cycle the Sync Module by unplugging for 15 seconds
Replace camera batteries — Blink Outdoor and XT2 use 2 AA lithium batteries
Move camera if it is behind glass — mount it outside or use Blink Mini (non-PIR) for window monitoring

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the sensor still misses events after repositioning, check whether a scheduled 'home' or 'away' mode is overriding the sensitivity setting silently.

Pro Tip

Blink cameras are designed for low-power event-based recording, not continuous recording. If you need 24/7 recording, the Blink Mini on USB power is the only Blink camera that supports it (with a subscription). For battery cameras, expect 2-year battery life with 10-15 motion events per day. Heavy traffic areas will drain batteries much faster. The Blink app does not show a percentage for battery — only OK, Medium, or Low — so replace batteries proactively when they hit Medium.

Real-World Insight

Live view problems that start suddenly usually trace back to an upload speed drop — the camera itself is fine, the bandwidth path to the cloud isn't.
