Problem Description

You are setting up the Ecobee SmartCamera for indoor monitoring. Choose a location with a clear view of the area you want to monitor and plug the camera into a power outlet using the included USB cable and adapter. The camera connects to 2.4GHz WiFi. This guide covers positioning, power connection, and app setup.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

The ecobee SmartCamera is an indoor plug-in camera, so setup is placement plus WiFi: give it a clear view of the room, a nearby outlet for USB power, and a strong 2.4GHz signal (pair with your phone on 2.4GHz).

Avoid aiming it straight at a bright window, which backlights and hides faces, and confirm the signal is solid where you place it. Once online you can fine-tune the angle; a weak-WiFi corner is the usual reason setup or streaming struggles.

Symptoms

  • Camera will not set up
  • Will not connect to WiFi
  • App cannot find it
  • Poor coverage angle
  • No video
  • Privacy/mounting question
  • Setup stalls
  • Weak signal

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Weak WiFi at the camera spot
  • USB power not connected
  • Phone on 5GHz during setup
  • Aimed to miss the area or into glare
  • Not in setup mode
  • Router AP isolation
  • Firmware update pending
  • Placed too high/low

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Security cameras should be installed at least 8 feet high to prevent tampering. Check local laws regarding recording audio and video. Never aim cameras at neighboring private property. Outdoor cameras should be rated IP65 or higher for weather resistance.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Choose a location and plug in

The Ecobee SmartCamera is designed for indoor use. Place it on a shelf, table, or mount it on a wall using the included magnetic mount. The camera has a 180-degree field of view, so a corner placement covers an entire room. Position it at about 4-5 feet height aimed toward the main entry points. Plug in the USB-C power cable — the camera requires constant power and has no battery.

2

Set up through the Ecobee app

Open the Ecobee app, tap the + icon, and select SmartCamera. The app walks you through connecting the camera to your 2.4GHz WiFi network. Scan the QR code on the bottom of the camera when prompted. WiFi setup takes about 2 minutes. The camera must be linked to the same Ecobee account as your thermostat to integrate with Haven home monitoring.

3

Configure motion detection and privacy

In the camera settings, set motion sensitivity and draw activity zones to define which areas trigger alerts. The SmartCamera uses an 8-core on-device processor for AI motion analysis — it distinguishes between people and pets locally, without sending video to the cloud for processing. Enable person detection to receive alerts only when a person is detected, filtering out pet movement and shadows.

4

Set up privacy modes

The SmartCamera has a built-in privacy shutter that physically covers the lens. Toggle it from the Ecobee app or set it to activate automatically based on occupancy — when someone is home, the camera stops recording; when everyone leaves, it activates. You can also set a schedule. Two-factor authentication is mandatory on all Ecobee camera accounts, adding a layer of protection against unauthorized access.

5

View live and recorded footage

Open the Ecobee app to view the live camera feed. Recorded clips appear in the timeline when the camera detects motion while armed. Without a subscription, the camera stores the last few hours of event clips. With Haven Plus, you get extended video history. The SmartCamera also displays its live feed directly on the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium screen — tap the camera icon on the thermostat to check the feed without pulling out your phone.

Quick Solutions

Place it where 2.4GHz WiFi is strong
Connect the USB power
Pair on 2.4GHz WiFi
Aim at the main area, avoiding backlight
Put it in setup mode
Disable AP isolation
Let firmware update
Position for a clear view

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

Camera issues that start suddenly almost always trace back to an upload bandwidth drop — run a speed test before assuming hardware failure.

Pro Tip

Set up activity zones to monitor only the areas that matter like your front porch and driveway and exclude the street. This dramatically reduces false alerts while ensuring you never miss an actual event at your property.

Real-World Insight

Live view problems that start suddenly usually trace back to an upload speed drop — the camera itself is fine, the bandwidth path to the cloud isn't.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Weak WiFi at the camera spot
  • USB power not connected
  • Phone on 5GHz during setup
  • Aimed to miss the area or into glare
