Overview
Step-by-step guide for mounting a single Night Owl wired bullet camera to an outdoor wall, soffit, or eave. Covers picking a IR-friendly location, drilling pilot holes, running the 60-foot BNC plus power pigtail back to the DVR, aiming, and weatherproofing the exterior cable penetration so the camera stays rated for IP66 rain and snow.
What's Included
- 1 Night Owl bullet camera with IP66 metal housing
- 1 wall mount bracket with 3-axis swivel
- 1 drill template showing screw spacing
- 3 self-tapping screws plus plastic wall anchors
- 1 BNC video and DC power pigtail attached
- 1 silicone weather cap for unused connector
Got your materials ready? Here's what to check first.
Before You Start
- Within 60 feet BNC run of the DVR location
- Under an eave, soffit, or covered wall for sun
- Solid stud or masonry behind the bracket plate
- Open 1/2 inch hole for cable pass-through
- 120V GFCI outlet near DVR for the power brick
- Existing home security conduit (optional reuse)
Don't skip this step — it breaks everything if you do
Do not mount bullet cameras in direct unprotected sunlight. The IP66 rating covers rain but prolonged UV exposure will haze the plastic dome and fade night vision IR LEDs.

Installation Steps
Pick the Mounting Spot
Choose an eave or soffit 8 to 10 feet above the ground that covers the area you want to monitor with the camera 70 degree field of view. Avoid facing directly into sunrise or sunset as the IR LEDs will wash out the image. Confirm the location is within 60 feet of the DVR so the factory BNC cable reaches without joining (joiners halve cable life outdoors).
Mark and Drill Holes
Hold the included paper drill template against the mounting surface and use a pencil to mark the three bracket screws and the 1/2 inch cable hole. For wood siding or soffit, pre-drill screw holes with a 3/32 inch bit. For stucco or brick, drill with a 3/16 inch masonry bit and tap in the included plastic anchors. Drill the 1/2 inch cable pass-through with a spade bit straight through.

Push the free end (yellow BNC plus red DC barrel) of the camera pigtail through the 1/2 inch hole from outside to inside. Feed the cable through the attic, soffit, or interior wall down to the DVR location. Keep at least 6 inches of cable slack coiled at the camera end for future aim adjustments and to form a drip loop that sheds rainwater away from the hole.
Mount and Aim the Camera
Screw the wall bracket flush to the surface with the three supplied screws, tightening in a triangular pattern. Thread the camera base onto the bracket and hand-tighten. Loosen the 3-axis swivel knobs, then angle the camera 15 to 20 degrees downward so faces are captured but the sky stays out of frame. Tighten all three knobs firmly before stepping off the ladder.
Seal and Test
Apply a bead of exterior silicone caulk around the cable pass-through hole on the outside of the wall to block water and insect entry. Connect the BNC plug to the correct numbered input on the rear of the DVR and connect the red DC plug to the matching red power cable from the multi-port adapter. Return to the DVR and confirm the new channel shows live video within 10 seconds.
Installation Tips
Still stuck? This is usually the deeper cause below.
Point the camera about 15 degrees downward from horizontal. This captures faces and license plates without wasting pixels on the sky or the overhang above the camera.
