Problem Description

Your Aqara Hub is stuck during WiFi setup. You open the Aqara Home app, add a new device, the hub makes its chime sound, but when you enter your WiFi password the connection fails. The app might show "Connection failed" or "Unable to connect to network" or it just spins forever and times out. You have tried multiple times, restarted the hub, even factory reset it, but it still will not connect. This is infuriating because the hub worked fine before or you just bought it and cannot even get started. The problem is almost always related to your WiFi network settings, not the hub itself.

Force Phone to 2.4GHz Network

The Aqara Hub only works on 2.4GHz WiFi but your phone probably auto-connects to 5GHz. Before opening the Aqara app go to your phone WiFi settings and forget the 5GHz network or connect specifically to your 2.4GHz SSID if your router broadcasts them separately. If your router uses a single SSID for both bands you need to temporarily disable 5GHz in router settings or stand far from the router where only 2.4GHz reaches. The hub gets its WiFi credentials from your phone so your phone must be on 2.4GHz during setup.

Check Router Security Settings

Log into your router admin panel usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. Go to wireless security settings and verify you are using WPA2-PSK not WPA3. The Aqara Hub does not support WPA3 and will fail silently during connection. Also check that your password does not contain unusual special characters like quotes, ampersands, or backslashes. Temporarily change your password to simple letters and numbers only then try setup again. You can change it back after the hub connects.

Disable AP Isolation on Router

AP isolation is a security feature that prevents WiFi devices from communicating with each other. It is often enabled by default on guest networks and some routers enable it everywhere. The Aqara app on your phone needs to communicate directly with the hub during setup. Go to your router wireless settings and look for AP isolation, client isolation, or wireless isolation. Disable it. If you cannot find it check under advanced wireless settings or guest network settings even if you are not using guest mode.

Factory Reset the Hub Properly

If the hub previously connected to a different network it may be stuck trying to reach the old WiFi. Factory reset clears all settings. For Hub M2 and M1S insert a pin into the reset hole on the bottom and hold for 10 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly. For Hub E1 hold the button on top for 10 seconds. Wait for the hub to reboot and play its ready sound. The LED should breathe slowly indicating it is in pairing mode. Start fresh in the Aqara app by adding a new accessory.

Move Hub Closer to Router During Setup

WiFi signal during initial setup needs to be strong. The hub has a weaker WiFi radio than your phone so even if your phone shows full bars the hub might struggle. Place the hub within 10 feet of your router with clear line of sight during setup. After setup succeeds you can move it to its permanent location. If the permanent location has weak signal add a Zigbee repeater like an Aqara smart plug between the hub and distant sensors to extend coverage without needing stronger WiFi.
