- Phone on 5GHz - Direct Connect needs 2.4GHz
- Bluetooth off (required for the setup handshake)
- Device not reset into pairing mode
Problem Description
You want to set up GE CYNC (formerly C by GE) Direct Connect devices. Direct Connect means the device connects directly to your 2.4GHz WiFi without needing a hub or bridge. CYNC bulbs, plugs, and switches with Direct Connect pair through the Cync app using Bluetooth for initial setup, then switch to WiFi for ongoing control.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
'Direct Connect' is GE CYNC's term for devices that connect straight to your 2.4GHz WiFi with no hub or bridge - CYNC bulbs, plugs, and switches with Direct Connect join your router directly and are controlled through the Cync app. The 'direct' part is what makes them simple, but the setup still leans on Bluetooth: the app uses a Bluetooth handshake to hand your WiFi credentials to the device, then the device switches to WiFi for ongoing control. That's why both Bluetooth (on the phone, with app permission) and a 2.4GHz network are required during setup, and why a device found over Bluetooth can still fail at the WiFi step if the phone is on 5GHz or the router band-steers.
Because there's no hub, troubleshooting is all about the device's pairing state and the 2.4GHz connection. Reset the device into pairing mode before adding it (bulbs use the five-times power toggle), and factory reset anything that was previously paired to another account, since that blocks a fresh setup. Pair within good 2.4GHz range and relocate afterward. Once the device is in the Cync app it works locally; for Alexa or Google control, link your Cync account to the assistant separately. Keep the app and firmware current to avoid setup incompatibilities.
Symptoms
- Understanding what Direct Connect means
- Device won't pair in the Cync app
- Setup fails at the WiFi step
- Device found over Bluetooth then fails on WiFi
- Device offline after setup
- Not sure if a hub is needed
- Pairing times out
- Voice control not working after setup
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Phone on 5GHz - Direct Connect needs 2.4GHz
- Bluetooth off (required for the setup handshake)
- Device not reset into pairing mode
- Device previously paired to another account
- Band-steered SSID hiding 2.4GHz
- Weak 2.4GHz signal at the device
- Cync account not linked to Alexa/Google
- App/firmware out of date
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not attempt to open or modify the light hardware. Smart lights contain electronic components that can be damaged by moisture or physical tampering. Always power off at the wall switch before removing or repositioning a smart light.

Step-by-Step Solution
Understand what Direct Connect means
GE CYNC Direct Connect devices connect to your WiFi router directly over 2.4GHz — no hub, no bridge, no Bluetooth gateway needed. The bulb, plug, or switch talks straight to your router and from there to the Cync cloud for app and voice control. This is the simplest setup in the CYNC lineup but it means each device uses one WiFi connection on your router.
Download the Cync app and create an account
Install the Cync app from the App Store or Google Play. Create an account with your email. The app requires location and Bluetooth permissions during setup — Bluetooth is used for the initial device discovery even though the device ultimately connects over WiFi. Deny these permissions and setup will fail silently.
Put the device in pairing mode
For bulbs: screw in the bulb and turn it on. New bulbs enter pairing mode automatically. If the bulb was previously set up, reset it by toggling power off and on 3 times quickly until it blinks. For plugs and switches: press and hold the button for 5-10 seconds until the LED flashes. The flashing indicates the device is broadcasting its setup signal.
Connect to your 2.4GHz WiFi
In the Cync app, tap +, select the light type, and follow the prompts. The app asks for your WiFi name and password. Enter your 2.4GHz network credentials — CYNC devices do not support 5GHz. If your router uses a single SSID for both bands, temporarily disable 5GHz during setup or the device may try to join the wrong band and fail.
Verify the device is online
After setup, tap the device in the Cync app and test on/off. The response should be nearly instant. If there is a 3-5 second delay, the WiFi signal at the device location may be weak. CYNC devices must be within about 40 feet of your router or another connected CYNC device that acts as a Bluetooth mesh relay. Move the device closer or add a WiFi extender.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
Group your smart lights by room in the app and assign clear names like Kitchen Ceiling and Bedroom Lamp. This makes voice commands more reliable and lets you create scenes that control multiple lights at once with a single command.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
