Installation Steps
Turn Off Existing Lights
Flip the wall switch off for the recessed light circuit you are working on. If your home has a breaker panel and you want extra safety turn off the breaker for that circuit. Wait 30 seconds for any residual heat to dissipate in the old bulbs. If the old bulbs were recently on they may be hot to the touch. Never work with powered fixtures when changing bulbs.
Remove Old BR30 Bulbs
Reach up into the recessed can housing and grip the old BR30 or flood bulb. Turn it counterclockwise until it unscrews from the E26 socket. Carefully pull it straight down and out of the can housing. If the bulb is stuck due to age or paint gently wiggle it while turning. Set old bulbs aside for proper disposal. Inspect the socket inside the can to make sure it is clean and the contacts are not corroded.
Install Hue BR30 Bulbs
Take your Philips Hue BR30 bulb and align the E26 screw base with the socket inside the recessed can. Turn the bulb clockwise by hand until it is snug. Do not overtighten as this can damage the socket or the bulb base. The BR30 form factor is designed to sit flush with or slightly recessed inside standard 5-inch and 6-inch can housings. Repeat for each recessed light you are replacing.
Power On and Verify
Turn the wall switch back on. Each newly installed Hue BR30 should immediately light up in a default warm white color indicating the bulb is powered and functional. If a bulb does not light up turn the switch off and check that the bulb is fully screwed in. Once all bulbs are glowing leave the wall switch in the ON position permanently. All dimming and color control will be done through the Hue app or accessories.
Pair Bulbs in Hue App
Open the Philips Hue app and go to Settings then Light setup then Add light. Tap Search. The app will discover all new unpaired Hue bulbs on your Zigbee network within about 30 seconds. Each BR30 will appear in the list. Tap each one to add it and assign it to the correct room. Give each bulb a descriptive name matching its physical location such as Kitchen Island Left or Hallway Can 2 for easy identification.
Installation Tips
Still stuck? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If you currently have dimmer switches controlling your recessed cans replace them with standard on-off toggle switches before installing Hue bulbs. Traditional dimmers cause Hue bulbs to flicker buzz and potentially fail prematurely.
