Overview

You want to mount Philips Hue Play light bars behind your computer monitor or TV for bias lighting and immersive screen sync effects with Hue Sync. This guide covers positioning the bars using the included mounting clips, connecting the shared power supply, and pairing them with your Hue Bridge for color scenes and entertainment zones.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Play bars behind a monitor come down to two limits: one power supply drives up to three bars, and the 3M adhesive needs a clean, smooth, room-temperature surface to hold on a monitor's back. Set up the Bridge first, then add the bars as Zigbee devices.

Wipe the mounting surface with isopropyl alcohol and press firmly, using the included clips if the back is vented or textured. Position the bars to spill light evenly off the wall behind the screen, route the cables so they don't tug, and if you want four or more bars, plan for a second power supply.

What's Included

  • One or two Hue Play light bar units per pack
  • Shared power supply unit that powers up to three bars
  • Mounting clips for vertical or horizontal positioning
  • Adhesive pads for attaching clips to monitor or TV back
  • USB-style cables connecting each bar to the power supply
  • Quick start guide with Hue Entertainment setup info

Got your materials ready? Here's what to check first.

Before You Start

  • Hue Bridge must be set up before adding Play bars
  • Power supply supports up to three bars via daisy chain
  • Place bars behind the monitor not beside it for best glow
  • Vertical mounting gives even top-to-bottom light spread
  • Download Hue Sync desktop app for screen color matching
  • Monitor must face a wall for visible light reflection

Don't skip this step — it breaks everything if you do

Warning

The shared power supply generates heat during operation. Do not cover it with papers or fabrics and do not place it inside a sealed drawer or cabinet without ventilation.

Installation Steps

1

Plan the position before peeling any adhesive

Hue Play bars come with adhesive pads and mounting clips. Before sticking anything, hold the bars behind your monitor and experiment with placement. For a single monitor, use two bars — one on each side, positioned vertically about 2 inches from the edge. For a widescreen or ultrawide monitor, add a third bar centered on the top. The bars should be 1-2 inches from the back of the monitor, not flush against it. Too close and the light pools in a narrow strip. Too far and the wall wash is uneven. Mark the positions with painter tape before committing.

2

Mount the bars and route the cables

Peel the adhesive backing on the mounting clip, press it firmly against the back of the monitor or the desk mount arm, and hold for 30 seconds. Snap the Play bar into the clip. For monitors on a VESA arm, mount the clips on the arm itself rather than the monitor — this keeps the bars stable when you tilt or swivel. Route the USB-C power cables along the arm or monitor stand using cable clips. The Hue Play power supply supports up to 3 bars from one adapter. Connect all bars to the same power supply to reduce cable clutter.

3

Add the bars to the Hue app and assign to an Entertainment Area

Open the Philips Hue app, go to Settings > Light Setup > Add Light > Search. The Play bars appear as individual lights. Name them based on position (Left Play Bar, Right Play Bar, Top Play Bar). Then go to Entertainment Areas and create a new area or edit an existing one. Drag the lights to match their physical position relative to your screen. Accurate placement matters — the Hue Sync desktop app uses these positions to match screen colors to the correct bar.

4

Set up Hue Sync for screen-matched colors

Install the Philips Hue Sync desktop app on your Windows PC or Mac. Sign in with your Hue account and select the Entertainment Area with your Play bars. Click Start Sync to begin matching bar colors to what is on your screen. Adjust Brightness, Intensity (how fast colors change), and the mode (Video, Music, or Game). For movies and gaming, set Intensity to High for responsive color changes. For ambient background use, set it to Subtle. The Sync app captures screen output — it does not work with DRM-protected content from some streaming apps.

5

Tune the bias lighting effect

After initial setup, adjust the bars for the best visual effect. Reduce Hue Play brightness to 60-70% for bias lighting behind a monitor — full brightness causes eye strain in a dark room. If the wall color is not white, the reflected light will have a color cast. You can compensate by adjusting the color temperature of the bars slightly — warm walls look better with cooler light settings. If one bar creates a hot spot (bright circle on the wall), angle it slightly outward. The goal is an even glow that extends 6-12 inches from each edge of the monitor.

Installation Tips

Mount bars in landscape orientation for wide monitors
Use portrait orientation for dual-monitor setups
Space two bars evenly behind the monitor left and right
Reduce brightness to 70% to avoid screen glare
Create an Entertainment area in app for Hue Sync
Assign bar positions in app matching physical placement

Still stuck? This is usually the deeper cause below.

Pro Tip

Position your monitor about six to eight inches from the wall for the best bias lighting effect. Too close and the light is harsh with visible hotspots. Too far and the glow becomes too faint to notice against the wall.
