- All bulbs lost power simultaneously and overwhelmed the Zigbee coordinator on rejoin
- Zigbee mesh network routing tables were disrupted by the simultaneous power loss
- Bridge Zigbee radio needs to rediscover all devices after mass disconnect
Problem Description
After a power outage multiple or all of your Philips Hue bulbs show as unreachable in the Hue app even though they turn on physically at the wall switch. The bridge shows connected and other non-Hue devices are fine. This happens because the power outage causes all bulbs to lose their Zigbee network timing simultaneously. When power returns all bulbs try to rejoin the Zigbee mesh at once overwhelming the bridge coordinator. Reddit users report this affecting 20 to 50 or more bulbs simultaneously with the only reliable fix being a Zigbee channel change.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
When power comes back, every Hue bulb in the house tries to rejoin the Zigbee network at the same time and the bridge gets overwhelmed. It can only process about 10 Zigbee rejoins per minute, so a house with 40 bulbs takes 4+ minutes to fully reconnect. Some bulbs end up stuck as unreachable because they timed out during the rejoin flood. Give it a solid 10 minutes before troubleshooting individual bulbs. For stragglers, toggle them off and on at the physical switch to force a fresh rejoin attempt. Do not restart the bridge — that just resets the queue and makes it worse.
Symptoms
- Multiple or all Hue bulbs show unreachable in the Hue app after power returns
- Bulbs physically turn on at the wall switch but are not controllable via app
- Hue dimmer switches and motion sensors do not control affected bulbs
- Some bulbs come back online but others remain unreachable
- Bridge shows connected and firmware is up to date
- Problem appeared immediately after a power outage or breaker trip
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- All bulbs lost power simultaneously and overwhelmed the Zigbee coordinator on rejoin
- Zigbee mesh network routing tables were disrupted by the simultaneous power loss
- Bridge Zigbee radio needs to rediscover all devices after mass disconnect
- Some bulbs failed to rejoin the Zigbee network after power restoration
- Zigbee channel has interference from WiFi that became apparent during mass rejoin
- Bridge itself lost power and rebooted before bulbs allowing timing mismatch
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Changing the Zigbee channel causes all Hue accessories including dimmer switches, motion sensors, and tap buttons to temporarily disconnect. They will rejoin automatically within a few minutes but you may need to press buttons on dimmers or sensors to wake them and trigger a rejoin. Check all accessories after the channel change.

Step-by-Step Solution
Wait and Check Periodically
After a power outage give the system 15 to 30 minutes to self-recover. The Zigbee mesh network is designed to heal itself as devices rejoin one by one. Open the Hue app every few minutes and check how many bulbs have come back online. Some large installations take up to 30 minutes for all devices to rejoin. If most bulbs recover on their own but a few remain unreachable proceed to the next steps for those specific bulbs.
Power Cycle the Bridge
Unplug the Hue Bridge power adapter. Wait 30 seconds. Plug it back in and wait 3 minutes for all LEDs to stabilize. The bridge reinitializes its Zigbee coordinator which sends out fresh beacon signals for all paired devices to rejoin. After the bridge is fully online check the app again. Many previously unreachable bulbs will come back within 5 minutes of a bridge restart.
Change the Zigbee Channel
This is the most effective fix for mass bulb disconnection. Open the Hue app go to Settings then Hue Bridges then tap your bridge then tap Zigbee Channel Change. The bridge will select a new channel and command all paired devices to switch. This forces every bulb to reestablish its Zigbee connection from scratch. The process takes 2 to 5 minutes and temporarily makes all lights unresponsive during the transition. After completion most or all bulbs should be reachable.
Toggle Individual Stubborn Bulbs
For any bulbs still unreachable after the channel change go to the physical light switch controlling that bulb. Turn it off for 10 seconds then back on. The bulb will attempt to rejoin the Zigbee network on the new channel. If the bulb is in a multi-bulb fixture toggle the switch to power cycle all bulbs in that fixture. Check the Hue app after each toggle to confirm the bulb appeared.
Factory Reset Bulbs That Will Not Rejoin
If nothing else works for bulbs that remain unreachable after all other steps factory reset them. Turn the bulb off and on 5 times in rapid succession with about 1 second between each cycle. The bulb will blink or flash confirming it has been reset. Then in the Hue app go to Settings then Lights then Add Light to re-discover and pair the reset bulb. You will need to reassign it to its room.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If drain continues after replacing batteries, check the event history — a stuck-open sensor or rapid polling loop burns through batteries in days.
Install a small UPS uninterruptible power supply on your Hue Bridge. Even though bulbs will lose power during an outage the bridge staying online means the Zigbee coordinator never drops. When power returns the bulbs rejoin much more reliably because the coordinator is already running and ready to accept connections.
Range tests in open air are useless for predicting real-world Z-Wave performance — a single concrete wall or appliance can cut effective range by more than half.
