Problem Description

When trying to connect the Philips Hue app to your Hue Bridge you see Error 101 link button not pressed. The app is asking you to physically press the round button on top of the Hue Bridge to authorize the connection but either you pressed it and the app did not detect it, or the button press is not registering properly. Error 101 is an authorization error that prevents the app from controlling your lights. Every new app, device, or third-party integration must be authorized by pressing the physical bridge button within 30 seconds of the connection attempt.

Symptoms

  • Hue app shows Error 101 link button not pressed
  • Pressing the bridge button does not resolve the error
  • Third-party app like Alexa or Google Home cannot find the Hue Bridge
  • Error appeared after reinstalling the Hue app or getting a new phone
  • Bridge LED shows normal blue but app will not connect
  • Multiple attempts to press the button all result in error 101

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Button was pressed too early or too late outside the 30-second authorization window
  • Phone and bridge are on different WiFi networks or VLANs
  • Bridge button is physically stuck or not making contact
  • Hue app does not have local network permissions on the phone
  • Router isolating devices preventing phone from reaching bridge
  • Bridge firmware outdated requiring update before new connections

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

The Hue Bridge has a limit of approximately 50 authorized apps and users. If you have connected many apps, phones, and services over the years the bridge may be full. In the Hue app go to Settings then Hue Bridges then select your bridge then remove old or unused authorized apps to free up space.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Time the Button Press Correctly

Open the Hue app and navigate to the screen that says Press the link button on your Hue Bridge. Before tapping the Search or Connect button in the app walk to the bridge and prepare to press the button. Tap the connect button in the app first then immediately press the round button on top of the bridge. You have exactly 30 seconds to press it after the app starts searching. The bridge button LED will briefly change when pressed confirming the press registered.

2

Verify Same Network

The phone running the Hue app must be on the exact same WiFi network as the bridge. The bridge connects to your router via Ethernet cable and is on your main network. If your phone is connected to a guest WiFi network, a mesh satellite on a different subnet, or a VPN the app cannot reach the bridge. On your phone go to WiFi settings and connect to your primary home network. Disable any VPN.

3

Grant Local Network Permission on iPhone

On iOS 14 and later the Hue app needs Local Network permission to discover the bridge. Go to iPhone Settings then scroll down to Hue app then enable Local Network. Without this permission the app cannot send the authorization request to the bridge even if you press the button. This is the most common cause of error 101 on iPhones running iOS 14 or later.

4

Check Router AP Isolation

Some routers have a feature called AP Isolation, Client Isolation, or Device Isolation that prevents devices on the same network from communicating with each other. This blocks the phone from reaching the bridge. Log into your router admin panel and disable AP isolation or client isolation under WiFi settings. This is especially common on ISP-provided routers that enable it by default.

5

Reboot the Bridge

Unplug the Hue Bridge power cable from the back. Wait 15 seconds. Plug it back in. Wait for all three LEDs on the front to light up solid indicating the bridge is fully online. The first LED is power, the second is network, and the third is portal connection. Once all three are solid retry the app connection and button press. A reboot clears any temporary state that may be blocking authorization.

Quick Solutions

Press the bridge button within 30 seconds of tapping connect in the app
Verify phone and bridge are on the same WiFi network
Grant local network permissions to the Hue app on your phone
Clean or unstick the bridge button if it does not click properly
Disable AP isolation or client isolation on your router
Reboot the bridge by unplugging for 10 seconds

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the hub reconnects then drops every few minutes, check for an IP conflict — two devices sharing the same DHCP address fight each other continuously.

Pro Tip

If you are connecting a third-party service like Amazon Alexa or Google Home to your Hue Bridge the authorization works differently. These services use cloud-to-cloud linking and do not require the physical button press. Instead they authenticate through your Hue account credentials in the Alexa or Google Home app. Error 101 only applies to direct local connections from the Hue app or local API integrations. **Product Intelligence:** - Requires Hue Bridge (Zigbee) - Matter support via bridge firmware update - HomeKit compatible

Real-World Insight

Hub disconnections that cycle repeatedly are almost always IP conflicts — two devices fighting over the same DHCP lease after a router restart.
