Problem Description

Every Philips Hue bulb in your home turns on at full warm white brightness after a power outage or even a brief power flicker. This happens at 2 AM or whenever the power is restored waking everyone in the house. The Hue app shows all lights as on but at settings you did not configure. This is the Hue Power-On Behaviour setting which defaults to turning on at the last used colour and brightness or full warm white on older firmware.

Symptoms

  • All Hue bulbs turn on simultaneously when power is restored after an outage
  • Lights come on at 2 or 3 AM waking everyone in the house after a brief flicker
  • Every bulb shows full warm white brightness even if it was set to a dim colour
  • Hue app shows all lights on after power returns but no one turned them on
  • Lights in bedrooms and bathrooms all activate creating a security concern appearance
  • Power flickers from storms cause lights to rapidly turn on and off

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Power-On Behaviour set to default which turns bulbs on when power is restored
  • Older Hue bulb firmware does not support Power-On Behaviour customisation
  • Hue Bridge lost communication with bulbs during outage resetting their state
  • UPS or surge protector cycling power rapidly confusing Hue bulb state
  • Some third-generation bulbs default to previous state while others default to on
  • Hue Labs formula for power recovery not configured or outdated

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not use smart switches or smart plugs to control Philips Hue bulbs. Cutting power to a Hue bulb via a switch defeats the smart features and causes the exact power-on behaviour issue. Hue bulbs should always have constant power with control done through the Hue app bridge or Hue switches.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Configure Power-On Behaviour Per Bulb

Open the Philips Hue app and go to Settings then tap the room containing bulbs you want to configure. Tap a specific light then scroll down to Power-On Behaviour. You have three options. Custom allows you to set a specific colour and brightness or Off. Power Loss Recovery restores the last state before the outage. The default turns bulbs on at warm white. Select Power Loss Recovery for living areas so lights return to their previous state. Select Custom then Off for bedrooms so they stay off after an outage. You must configure this for each individual bulb.

2

Update All Bulb Firmware

Power-On Behaviour customisation requires bulb firmware that supports it. Very old Hue bulbs from 2015 and earlier may not support this feature. In the Hue app go to Settings then Software Update. If updates are available install them for all bulbs. The update process sends new firmware via the Hue Bridge to each bulb over Zigbee. This can take 15 to 30 minutes per bulb. Do not turn off bulbs or the bridge during updates. After updating the Power-On Behaviour option will appear in each bulb settings.

3

Batch Configure Rooms

Instead of configuring each bulb individually you can set Power-On Behaviour at the room level. In the Hue app go to the room then tap the gear icon. Select Power-On Behaviour for the entire room. Choose Off for bedrooms and bathrooms. Choose Power Loss Recovery for living rooms and kitchens. This applies the setting to every bulb in that room at once. Any new bulbs added to the room later will inherit the room Power-On Behaviour setting automatically.

Create Safety Net Automation

As a backup create an automation in the Hue app that turns off all lights at a specific time. Go to Automations then tap Create then Time Based. Set it to run at 3 AM every night and turn off all lights in bedrooms. This acts as a safety net so even if a power outage at 2 AM turns on all lights they will automatically turn off at 3 AM. You can create multiple automations for different rooms and times based on your household schedule.

5

Verify Configuration After Next Outage

After configuring Power-On Behaviour for all bulbs test it by turning off the power at your circuit breaker panel. Turn off the breaker that controls a room with Hue bulbs. Wait 10 seconds then turn it back on. Bulbs configured as Off should remain off. Bulbs configured as Power Loss Recovery should return to whatever state they were in before the breaker was turned off. If any bulb does not behave as expected check its individual Power-On Behaviour setting. Some bulbs may have reverted to default after a firmware update.

Quick Solutions

Set Power-On Behaviour to Power Loss Recovery for each bulb in Hue app
Update all Hue bulb firmware to support custom Power-On Behaviour
Configure bulbs to stay off or return to last state after power restore
Use Hue rooms and zones to batch configure Power-On Behaviour
Install whole-home UPS or smart power strips to prevent sudden power cycling
Create automation in Hue app to turn off all lights at specific time as safety net

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If drain continues after replacing batteries, check the event history — a stuck-open sensor or rapid polling loop burns through batteries in days.

Pro Tip

The Philips Hue Power-On Behaviour setting is stored in the bulb itself not the bridge. This means it works even if the Hue Bridge is offline during the power outage. Once configured the bulb will follow the Power-On Behaviour independently.

Real-World Insight

Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Power-On Behaviour set to default
  • Older Hue bulb firmware does not support Power-On Behaviour
  • Hue Bridge lost communication with bulbs during outage resetting
  • UPS or surge protector cycling power rapidly confusing Hue
  • Some third-generation bulbs default to previous state while others
