- On a Bridge v2, not a Bridge Pro (feature unavailable)
- Fewer than 3-4 compatible bulbs in the area
- Using a Smart Plug or a portable/battery light
Problem Description
MotionAware turns three or four of your existing Hue bulbs into a motion sensor by reading fluctuations in the Zigbee signal between them, but it only works when specific Bridge, bulb, and placement conditions are met. If your Motion area will not detect you, will not calibrate, or the setup option is missing entirely, one of those requirements is almost always the reason.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
MotionAware turns 3-4 existing Hue bulbs into a motion sensor by reading Zigbee signal fluctuations, but it only works under specific conditions and is exclusive to the Hue Bridge Pro. In real homes the usual reasons it fails are being on an older Bridge v2, bulbs switched off at the wall so they cannot sense, or lights bunched at one height that leave dead zones.
Confirm the Bridge Pro, keep the bulbs powered, space them at varying heights, and calibrate with the room completely empty.
Symptoms
- MotionAware area does not detect you walking in
- The MotionAware option is missing in the app
- Calibration fails or never completes
- Lights do not turn on with motion
- One corner of the room never triggers
- Works only when the lights are already on
- Detection stops when a switch is flipped off
- Poor or no detection when used outdoors
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- On a Bridge v2, not a Bridge Pro (feature unavailable)
- Fewer than 3-4 compatible bulbs in the area
- Using a Smart Plug or a portable/battery light
- Bulbs switched off at the wall, losing power
- Lights too close, too far, or all at one height
- Someone or a pet in the room during calibration
- Walls between the chosen lights
- Trying to use it outdoors
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Step-by-Step Solution
Confirm you actually have a Bridge Pro
MotionAware runs only on the Hue Bridge Pro and is not available on the older square Bridge v2. In the Hue app open Settings and check which hub you have; the Bridge Pro is the newer rounded model. If you are still on a v2 Bridge, the MotionAware option does not appear anywhere in the app, and no amount of resetting will add it. You would need to migrate to a Bridge Pro first.
Use three to four compatible mains-powered bulbs
A Motion area needs three to four compatible Hue lights working together. About 95 percent of Hue products qualify, but the Hue Smart Plug, portable and battery lights such as the Hue Go and portable table lamps, and some older devices cannot be used. Build the area from fixed, wall-powered bulbs rather than lamps you unplug or move, since the system depends on those exact lights staying in the same place.
Keep those lights powered at the wall switch
MotionAware only works while the chosen bulbs have power, because they have to keep talking to each other over Zigbee to sense the field between them. If someone flips the wall switch off, those lights cannot detect motion and cannot turn themselves back on. Put the switch behind a Hue dimmer, a wall-switch module, or a switch guard so the bulbs always stay energized even when the room looks off.
Space the lights apart and at different heights
Place the area lights between 1 and 7 meters apart, roughly 3 to 23 feet, and at varying heights instead of in a single straight line, so the Zigbee field fills the room from floor to ceiling. Aim the coverage across the paths and doorways where people actually move. Lights bunched too close, spread too far, or all mounted at the same level leave dead zones the system cannot read as motion.
Clear the room and let it calibrate
During setup every person and pet must leave the room so the lights can record a baseline of the empty space. If anyone is moving in the room while it calibrates, the baseline is wrong and detection stays erratic afterward. Start the calibration in the app, step out of the room, and wait for it to confirm before you walk back in to test. Recalibrate any time you move furniture or a bulb.
Account for interior walls and keep it indoors
Walls between the chosen lights break up the Zigbee signal, so keep every light in a Motion area within the same open room rather than split across a partition. MotionAware is indoor-only; outdoors the signal has nothing to bounce off and detection falls apart. If one corner never triggers, add or reposition a bulb so three of the area lights surround that spot and close the gap.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If the sensor still misses events after repositioning, check whether a scheduled 'home' or 'away' mode is overriding the sensitivity setting silently.
MotionAware senses movement, so a person sitting very still can read as no motion and the lights may time out; pair the area with a normal no-motion off-delay rather than expecting it to hold lights on for someone reading in a chair. Philips documents the feature at https://www.philips-hue.com/en-us/support/hue-motionaware, and it keeps gaining ability through Bridge Pro updates, including presence detection added in late 2025.
Missed motion events are almost always a zone coverage problem, not hardware failure — zone placement accounts for 90% of these complaints.
