Problem Description

When opening the Philips Hue app it shows No Hue Bridge Found and cannot discover your bridge even though the bridge is plugged in and the LEDs indicate it is online. The app searches for the bridge on your local network but cannot find it. This prevents you from controlling any of your Hue lights from the app. The bridge uses a network discovery protocol called mDNS and UPnP to announce itself on the local network. If your phone cannot reach the bridge through these protocols the app shows this error.

Symptoms

  • Hue app shows No Hue Bridge Found on startup
  • App searching animation runs indefinitely without finding the bridge
  • Bridge LEDs show all three lights solid indicating normal operation
  • Error started after changing router or WiFi network
  • Bridge was found yesterday but not today with no changes made
  • Other Hue users in the household can connect but you cannot

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Phone connected to a different network or VLAN than the bridge
  • Router mDNS or UPnP discovery disabled or blocked
  • Bridge lost its IP address due to DHCP lease expiration
  • Router firmware update changed network isolation settings
  • VPN on phone routing traffic outside the local network
  • Bridge Ethernet cable loose or connected to wrong router port

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

If you recently switched to a mesh WiFi system like Eero, Orbi, or Google Wifi the bridge must be connected via Ethernet to the primary mesh router unit not a satellite. Satellites may isolate wired devices on a different subnet preventing phone-to-bridge communication.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check Bridge Network Connection

Look at the three LEDs on the front of the Hue Bridge. The first LED is power. The second LED is network connection to router. The third LED is internet portal connection. If the second LED is off or blinking the bridge does not have a valid network connection. Check the Ethernet cable plugged into the back of the bridge. Ensure it is firmly connected. Try a different Ethernet cable. Try a different port on your router. The network LED should be solid when properly connected.

2

Connect Phone to Same Network

The Hue app discovers the bridge via local network broadcast. Your phone must be on the exact same network. If you have multiple WiFi networks such as a 2.4GHz and 5GHz with different names, a guest network, or mesh satellites on separate subnets your phone may not be on the same network as the bridge. Connect your phone to the primary WiFi network that your router broadcasts. Disable any VPN.

3

Reboot Bridge and Router

Unplug the Hue Bridge for 15 seconds then plug it back in. Then unplug your router for 30 seconds and plug it back in. Wait 3 minutes for everything to come online. The bridge will request a new IP address via DHCP and announce itself on the network. Open the Hue app and let it search again. Rebooting both devices clears stale network states that can prevent discovery.

4

Enable UPnP on Router

The Hue Bridge uses UPnP to announce itself on the network. Some routers disable UPnP by default for security. Log into your router admin panel and look for UPnP settings under Network or Advanced. Enable UPnP. Save and reboot the router. After the router restarts open the Hue app and search for the bridge again. This is the most common fix for bridge discovery failures on new routers.

5

Add Bridge Manually by IP Address

If auto-discovery continues to fail you can add the bridge manually. You need the bridge IP address which you can find by logging into your router admin panel and looking at the connected devices list for a device named Philips-hue or similar. Note the IP address. In the Hue app on the bridge search screen look for a manual entry option or visit meethue.com/api/nupnp from a device on the same network which returns the bridge IP. Enter this IP in the app to connect directly without discovery.

Quick Solutions

Ensure phone is on the same network as the bridge
Check bridge Ethernet cable connection to router
Reboot bridge and router to refresh network discovery
Enable UPnP and mDNS on your router
Disable VPN on phone during bridge discovery
Manually add bridge by IP address if auto-discovery fails

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the hub reconnects then drops every few minutes, check for an IP conflict — two devices sharing the same DHCP address fight each other continuously.

Pro Tip

After connecting create a DHCP reservation for your Hue Bridge in your router settings. Find the bridge MAC address in the Hue app under Settings then Hue Bridges then your bridge. In your router assign a fixed IP to this MAC. This prevents future discovery failures caused by the bridge getting a new IP address after a router reboot. **Product Intelligence:** - Requires Hue Bridge (Zigbee) - Matter support via bridge firmware update - HomeKit compatible

Real-World Insight

Hub disconnections that cycle repeatedly are almost always IP conflicts — two devices fighting over the same DHCP lease after a router restart.
