Problem Description

The August activity feed logs every lock and unlock — by app, keypad, auto-lock, or manual turn — with who and when. When entries are missing, some events don't appear, usually because the lock was offline when they happened or manual operations weren't detected.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

The August activity feed depends on the lock being online to upload events in real time — so missing entries usually mean the lock was offline (its WiFi bridge or radio down) when those actions happened, and the events weren't recorded or synced. Manual thumbturn operations are also detected less reliably than app or keypad actions.

Keep the lock connected — a stable WiFi bridge or the WiFi lock's own connection — so events log as they occur, and set up DoorSense for richer state detail. Update firmware and re-sync the app if the feed seems stuck. Some purely manual turns may appear with less "who" detail than app or keypad events, which is expected rather than a fault.

Symptoms

  • Activity feed missing entries
  • Some lock/unlock events not logged
  • Manual turns not recorded
  • Gaps in the history
  • Events appear late
  • No entries while away
  • Feed not updating
  • Who/when info missing

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Lock offline (bridge/WiFi down) when events occurred
  • Events buffered but not uploaded
  • Manual thumbturn turns not always detected
  • DoorSense not set up (less state detail)
  • Firmware out of date
  • App/account sync issue
  • Bridge intermittent
  • Time/timezone mismatch

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always keep a physical backup key accessible outside your home in case of total lock failure. Never perform a factory reset while locked out as this may disable all electronic access. Ensure battery level is above 50 percent before firmware updates to prevent corruption.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check which August account you are signed into

The August/Yale Access app supports multiple accounts and shared access. If you were invited as a guest, you may not see the full activity log — only lock owners and admins see all events. Open the August app, tap the lock, and check the top of the screen for your role (Owner, Admin, or Guest). If you are logged into the wrong account, sign out and sign back in with the correct email. Also check if you have the lock set up in both the old August app and the newer Yale Access app — the activity feed only shows in whichever app the lock is currently registered to.

2

Check the August Connect bridge or WiFi module

Activity feed events are stored in the August cloud, which requires the lock to have an internet connection. If you only have Bluetooth (no bridge or WiFi module), the activity feed only updates when your phone is within Bluetooth range and the app is open. For real-time remote logging, you need an August Connect WiFi Bridge plugged in within 5-10 feet of the lock, or a Yale lock with the WiFi module installed. Check the bridge status in the app — it should show a green dot. If it shows offline, unplug the bridge for 10 seconds, plug it back in, and wait for the LED to turn solid green.

3

Force refresh the activity feed

Pull down on the activity feed screen to force a refresh. If events still do not appear, close the app completely (swipe it away from the app switcher), reopen it, and check again. On Android, also check that the August app has Background App Refresh and unrestricted battery optimization — some Android phones kill background app processes, which prevents the feed from syncing. On iPhone, go to Settings > August > Background App Refresh and make sure it is enabled.

4

Check for auto-lock and DoorSense events

If manual lock/unlock events appear but auto-lock or DoorSense events are missing, those features may be disabled or misconfigured. Go to Lock Settings and check that Auto-Lock is toggled on and DoorSense is calibrated. Auto-lock events only appear in the feed when the feature is active and the lock successfully engages. If DoorSense is not calibrated, door open/close events will not log. Run the DoorSense calibration from the app settings.

5

Sign out and sign back in to reset the session

If the activity feed shows a loading spinner or is completely blank, the app session token may be expired. Sign out of the August or Yale Access app: go to Account Settings > Sign Out. Then sign back in with your email and password. After signing in, open the lock and check the activity feed — it should load historical events from the cloud. If the feed remains empty after signing back in, check that the lock itself is still paired — go to Devices and confirm the lock appears. If it does not, the lock may have been removed from your account and needs to be re-added.

Quick Solutions

Keep the lock online (bridge/WiFi) so events upload live
Restore bridge/WiFi connectivity
Set up DoorSense for fuller state logging
Update the firmware
Re-sync the app / sign out and in
Fix an intermittent bridge connection
Verify the time and timezone
Expect some manual turns may log with less detail

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

Set up auto-lock to engage 30 seconds after the door closes so you never accidentally leave it unlocked. Create temporary access codes for guests and service workers that automatically expire after a set time period.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.
