Problem Description

Your Matter-certified smart lock cannot complete the commissioning process when adding it to Apple Home, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa. The setup wizard finds the lock via Bluetooth but fails during the Thread network join phase, or the commissioning completes in the app but the lock immediately shows as unavailable. Smart lock Matter commissioning is more complex than WiFi devices because the lock must join the Thread mesh in addition to establishing controller fabric credentials.

Symptoms

  • Lock is discovered via Bluetooth but fails during Thread network join step
  • Commissioning progress reaches 80 to 90 percent then fails with a generic error
  • Lock shows as commissioned in app but immediately appears as unavailable
  • Commissioning succeeds but lock never responds to any subsequent commands
  • Lock commissioning fails only when done from a specific platform but succeeds on another

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • No Thread border router is reachable from the lock's installed location
  • Lock was previously commissioned and not fully factory reset before new attempt
  • Lock firmware needs updating before Matter commissioning is supported
  • Phone is too far from both the lock and the Thread border router during commissioning
  • Lock battery is too low to maintain both Bluetooth and Thread during the commissioning process

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

After a factory reset, the lock loses all stored access codes. Document all current codes before resetting a lock that is already in use on a door.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Install Fresh Batteries Before Starting Commissioning

Matter commissioning for a Thread-based lock requires the lock to simultaneously maintain a Bluetooth LE connection to your phone and negotiate Thread network membership — two radio-intensive operations that require strong battery power. Low batteries cause the Bluetooth connection to drop at a critical moment, aborting commissioning at 70 to 90 percent complete. Install fresh alkaline batteries before starting the commissioning process even if the lock's battery indicator shows adequate charge. Do not use rechargeable batteries for commissioning — their lower voltage can cause unpredictable radio behavior.

Ensure a Thread Border Router Is Within Range of the Lock

Unlike WiFi Matter devices, smart locks use Thread and must successfully join the Thread mesh during commissioning. If no Thread border router is within reliable range of the lock's installed location, the lock cannot join the Thread network and commissioning fails at the network join step. Before commissioning, temporarily move a Thread border router device — Apple TV 4K, HomePod mini, or Amazon Echo 4th gen — to a location within 20 feet of the lock. After successful commissioning, the border router can be moved back and the Thread mesh will maintain the lock connection through other mesh nodes if coverage permits.

3

Factory Reset the Lock to Clear Previous Commissioning State

If the lock was previously installed in another home, commissioned to a different platform, or partially commissioned in a failed previous attempt, its internal commissioning state may block new attempts. Perform a factory reset using the procedure in your lock manual — this varies by brand but typically involves pressing and holding a reset button inside the battery compartment or performing a specific combination of button presses while powered. After the factory reset is confirmed by LED flash or beep, immediately proceed with commissioning — do not wait, as the commissioning window is limited.

4

Update Lock Firmware Via the Manufacturer App First

Some lock models shipped with firmware that predates Matter certification and require an over-the-air update before Matter commissioning works. Install the lock manufacturer's native app, add the lock using the Bluetooth-only setup flow within that app, and check for firmware updates in device settings. Allow the firmware update to complete fully before proceeding. After the update, factory reset the lock to clear the manufacturer pairing and restore a fresh Matter commissioning window. Now attempt Matter commissioning from your preferred controller app.

5

Stay Near the Lock Throughout the Entire Commissioning Process

Matter lock commissioning requires Bluetooth contact between your phone and the lock for the duration of the setup flow — typically 2 to 4 minutes. If your phone moves out of Bluetooth range at any point during commissioning, the process fails. Stand within 3 feet of the lock throughout the entire commissioning flow. After the lock transfers to the Thread network and the app confirms commissioning is complete, you can step away. If you must use an iOS device, ensure it stays awake and does not auto-lock its screen mid-commissioning, which can interrupt Bluetooth-dependent operations.

Quick Solutions

Install fresh batteries in the lock before commissioning
Confirm at least one Thread border router is within 30 feet of the lock during commissioning
Factory reset the lock to clear any previous commissioning state
Update lock firmware via manufacturer app before Matter commissioning
Stay close to the lock with your phone throughout the entire commissioning process

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

If commissioning consistently fails at the same percentage in the progress bar, note that percentage. Around 50% usually indicates a Bluetooth handoff issue. Around 80-90% usually indicates a Thread mesh join failure.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • No Thread border router is reachable from the lock's
  • Lock was previously commissioned and not fully factory reset
  • Lock firmware needs updating before Matter commissioning is supported
  • Phone is too far from both the lock and
  • Lock battery is too low to maintain both Bluetooth
