Problem Description

Your Wyze Lock Bolt makes a grinding or clicking noise when you try to lock or unlock it from the Wyze app but the deadbolt does not fully extend or retract. The motor runs briefly then stops and the app shows an error or the lock status stays unchanged. The fingerprint reader and keypad may still register inputs but the deadbolt physically jams. This commonly occurs when the door or frame has shifted causing misalignment, the motor gear is stripped, or the batteries are too low to drive the deadbolt.

Symptoms

  • Lock motor makes grinding noise but deadbolt does not move to locked position
  • Wyze app shows lock command sent but status does not change to locked
  • Fingerprint unlocks successfully but deadbolt only moves halfway then stops
  • Lock worked fine for months then suddenly started jamming in cold weather
  • Manual thumb turn on interior side is very stiff or hard to rotate
  • Wyze app shows Lock Jammed error notification after every lock attempt

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Door frame shifted causing deadbolt strike plate misalignment
  • Batteries below 30 percent providing insufficient motor torque
  • Interior thumb turn calibration drifted causing motor to overshoot or undershoot
  • Cold weather contracting door frame making deadbolt hole tighter
  • Lock motor gear teeth worn from repeated force against misaligned strike
  • Deadbolt hole in door frame too shallow for full bolt extension

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Never force the Wyze Lock Bolt thumb turn if it is stuck. Forcing it can strip the internal plastic gear teeth permanently. If the manual turn does not rotate smoothly remove the lock from the door and inspect the mechanism before continuing to use it.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Test Deadbolt Manually First

Open the door so the deadbolt is not engaging the door frame. Turn the interior thumb turn by hand to extend and retract the deadbolt. It should move smoothly with minimal resistance. If it is stiff even with the door open the lock mechanism itself has an issue. If it moves freely with the door open but jams when closed the problem is door or frame alignment. This test immediately tells you whether to focus on the lock or the door.

2

Check and Fix Strike Plate Alignment

Close the door and slowly extend the deadbolt using the thumb turn. Watch where the bolt meets the strike plate opening on the door frame. If the bolt is hitting the edge of the strike plate instead of sliding cleanly into the hole the door has shifted. Remove the two strike plate screws and reposition the plate so the hole aligns with the deadbolt. You may need to chisel the mortise slightly wider. Use 3 inch screws instead of the original short screws to anchor the strike plate through the frame into the wall stud for a solid hold.

3

Replace Batteries With Lithium AAs

The Wyze Lock Bolt uses 4 AA batteries. When batteries drop below 30 percent the motor does not have enough torque to overcome even minor deadbolt resistance. Remove the interior battery cover and replace all 4 batteries at once. Use Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries not alkaline. Lithium batteries maintain consistent voltage until nearly depleted and perform significantly better in cold weather. After replacing batteries the lock should have full motor power.

4

Recalibrate Lock in Wyze App

Open the Wyze app and go to the Lock Bolt device page. Tap the gear icon then tap Calibrate Lock. The app will instruct you to open the door then fully extend and retract the deadbolt. Follow each step precisely. This process teaches the lock motor exactly how far to travel in each direction for your specific door. If the calibration was off by even a few degrees the motor would stop short or try to push past the physical limit causing the jam error. Always recalibrate after replacing batteries.

5

Lubricate the Deadbolt Mechanism

Apply graphite lubricant powder into the deadbolt keyhole and around the bolt where it enters the door frame. Do not use WD-40 or oil-based lubricants as they attract dust and eventually make the problem worse. Graphite is a dry lubricant that reduces metal-on-metal friction without residue buildup. Extend and retract the deadbolt manually several times after applying graphite to work it into the mechanism. This is especially important in cold weather when metal components contract and friction increases.

Quick Solutions

Realign door strike plate so deadbolt extends freely without resistance
Replace all 4 AA batteries with fresh lithium batteries for maximum torque
Recalibrate lock position in Wyze app to reset motor travel limits
Lubricate deadbolt with graphite powder to reduce friction
Deepen deadbolt hole in door frame if bolt cannot fully extend
Check door hinges and tighten screws if door has sagged

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

If your door consistently jams in winter but works fine in summer the wood frame is expanding and contracting with humidity changes. Consider having a locksmith enlarge the deadbolt hole in the frame by 2 to 3 millimetres to accommodate seasonal movement.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.

  • Interior thumb turn calibration drifted
