- Camera in setup mode awaiting configuration
- Firmware update downloading or installing
- WiFi disconnected and attempting reconnect
Problem Description
Your Wyze camera is showing light patterns you don't understand. Wyze cameras use LED status lights to indicate connection status, recording activity, and errors. Knowing what each pattern means helps you quickly diagnose issues. This covers Wyze Cam v3, v4, OG, Pan, Outdoor, and Doorbell models.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
The most common question is about the red light, which indicates WiFi disconnection. This usually happens after a router reboot or ISP outage. The second most common question is about the camera staying on blinking yellow after a firmware update failure. For blinking yellow with a failed update, flashing firmware from a micro SD card is usually required — the Wyze support site has model-specific firmware files and instructions. Solid yellow that does not progress is the most frustrating issue and often means the camera needs firmware recovery or replacement.
Symptoms
- Camera showing solid blue light continuously
- Flashing yellow light during setup
- Red light appearing unexpectedly
- Light blinking but camera not responding
- No light at all when camera should be on
- Purple or unusual color light showing
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Camera in setup mode awaiting configuration
- Firmware update downloading or installing
- WiFi disconnected and attempting reconnect
- Recording in progress or Live View active
- Night vision IR lights activating
- Error condition requiring troubleshooting
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Never unplug a Wyze camera while the light is alternating blue and yellow — this means a firmware update is in progress. Interrupting the update can corrupt the firmware and require a manual SD card flash to recover. If you think an update is stuck (20+ minutes), wait a full 30 minutes before power cycling. Most stuck updates complete if given enough time.
Tools & Requirements
Step-by-Step Solution
Solid blue light — camera is connected and working
A solid blue light means the camera is online, connected to WiFi, and functioning normally. This is the normal state. If you see solid blue and the camera is working in the app, everything is fine. Some Wyze cameras let you turn off the status light in Settings > Advanced Settings > Camera Status Light if the blue glow is distracting at night.
Blinking blue light — camera is starting up or connecting
A blinking blue light means the camera is booting up or trying to connect to WiFi. This is normal during startup and should turn solid blue within 1-2 minutes. If it keeps blinking for more than 3 minutes, the camera cannot reach your WiFi network. Check that your router is online, the camera is within WiFi range, and the network credentials have not changed.
Solid yellow/amber light — camera is booting firmware
A solid yellow or amber light appears briefly during power-on as the camera loads its firmware. This should last only 15-30 seconds before transitioning to blinking blue (connecting) and then solid blue (connected). If the camera stays on solid yellow for more than a minute, the firmware may be corrupted. Try power cycling — unplug for 10 seconds and replug. If it persists, you may need to flash firmware from an SD card.
Blinking yellow light — camera is in setup mode or ready for firmware flash
A blinking yellow light means the camera is in setup mode, waiting to be paired with the Wyze app. This happens when the camera is new or has been factory reset. Open the Wyze app and follow the Add Device process. If you did not intentionally reset the camera and it is blinking yellow, someone may have pressed the setup button, or a firmware update failed and the camera reverted to setup mode.
Alternating blue and yellow — camera is updating firmware
If the light alternates between blue and yellow, the camera is installing a firmware update. Do not unplug the camera during this process — interrupting a firmware update can brick the camera. Wait 5-10 minutes for the update to complete. The light will return to solid blue when the update is finished. If it has been alternating for more than 15 minutes, the update may be stuck — power cycle if nothing else works.
Red light — camera is not connected to WiFi
A solid or blinking red light on Wyze Cam v3 and later models means the camera has no internet connection. The camera has power but cannot reach the Wyze servers. Check your router — it may have rebooted or lost internet. Also check WiFi signal at the camera location. Power cycle the camera and router. If the red light persists, reconnect the camera to WiFi through the Wyze app setup process.
No light at all — camera has no power
If there is no light, the camera is not receiving power. Check the USB cable and power adapter. Wyze cameras need a 5V 1A or 2A USB adapter — some low-power adapters or long USB cables do not deliver enough power. Try a different USB cable and adapter. If using a USB extension, keep it under 15 feet total. If the camera is powered through a solar panel or battery pack, check those power sources. If no combination of cables and adapters produces any light, the camera is likely dead.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
Camera issues that start suddenly almost always trace back to an upload bandwidth drop — run a speed test before assuming hardware failure.
The most useful light to recognize is the red light — it means your camera is powered on but not connected to the internet, so it is not recording to the cloud or sending alerts. Check your WiFi immediately when you see red. For nighttime cameras, you can disable the status light in the Wyze app under camera Settings > Advanced Settings > Camera Status Light so the blue glow does not illuminate the room.
Live view problems that start suddenly usually trace back to an upload speed drop — the camera itself is fine, the bandwidth path to the cloud isn't.
