- Wrong timezone set for the device/home
- Device offline (can't sync time/cloud)
- Power outage reset the plug
Problem Description
Kasa smart plugs can run schedules and timers to turn devices on and off automatically. This covers schedules not firing, firing at the wrong time, or being lost — usually a time/timezone, connectivity, or power issue.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
Kasa schedules run off the plug's clock, which it sets from the internet based on your timezone — so the classic failure is a wrong timezone (or a device that's offline and can't sync time), making schedules fire hours off or not at all. Sunrise/sunset schedules additionally need your home location set.
Check the plug's timezone matches your home and that it's online so it can keep its clock accurate, then set your location if you use sunrise/sunset triggers. Remove any conflicting schedules that fight each other, and update firmware. A power outage can wipe schedules on some setups, so re-create them if they vanished after one.
Symptoms
- Schedule doesn't run
- Runs at the wrong time
- Schedule lost/disappeared
- On/off times off by hours
- Only some schedules fire
- Schedule works locally not remotely
- Sunrise/sunset offset wrong
- Schedule stopped after an outage
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Wrong timezone set for the device/home
- Device offline (can't sync time/cloud)
- Power outage reset the plug
- Firmware out of date
- Sunrise/sunset location not set
- Conflicting schedules/timers
- Daylight-saving shift
- App/account out of sync
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Never exceed the smart plug maximum wattage rating listed on the device or packaging. Do not use smart plugs with space heaters, high-wattage appliances, or devices that must not be interrupted like medical equipment. Smart plugs are not designed for outdoor use unless specifically rated for it.
Step-by-Step Solution
Verify schedules are saved and enabled
In the Kasa app, tap the smart plug > Schedule. Check that schedule entries exist and each one shows as enabled (toggle is on/green). Tap each entry to verify the time, days of the week, and action (on/off) are correct. A common mistake: setting a schedule for PM when you meant AM. Also check that all intended days are selected — a weekday-only schedule does not trigger on Saturday.
Check the plug time zone
The plug syncs its time from the Kasa cloud based on the location set during setup. If the time zone is wrong, schedules fire at the wrong time. In the Kasa app, check the plug > Settings > Device Time or Time Zone. If incorrect, remove the plug from the app and re-add it while your phone is showing the correct time and location.
Check for WiFi connection issues
Kasa schedules run on the Kasa cloud — if the plug is offline (lost WiFi), cloud-triggered schedules do not fire. However, newer Kasa plugs (EP25, KP125) store schedules locally on the device — these run even without WiFi. Check your plug model. If schedules fail only when WiFi is spotty, the plug may lack local schedule support. Stabilize the WiFi connection (add an extender) or upgrade to a plug with local scheduling.
Delete and recreate problem schedules
If a schedule looks correct but does not trigger: delete it and create a new one. Schedule data can become corrupted during cloud sync. In the Kasa app, swipe the schedule entry to delete, then create a new entry with the same settings. After recreating, manually turn the plug on and off from the app to verify the plug is responsive — a plug that does not respond to manual commands will also miss scheduled commands.
Check for overlapping or conflicting schedules
If you have multiple schedules that trigger at the same time (one turns on and another turns off at the same minute), the result is unpredictable. Review all schedules and remove conflicts. Also check if Away Mode or Timer is active — these override schedules. Timers count down and turn the plug on/off regardless of schedules. Disable timers if you want schedules to control the plug exclusively.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
Schedules that skip randomly are usually a daylight-saving holdover — delete and recreate the schedule to clear the corrupted entry.
Use smart plugs with energy monitoring to track exactly how much electricity each appliance uses. Set up Away Mode schedules that randomly toggle lamps on and off to make your home look occupied when you are traveling.
Thermostat issues that keep returning are often caused by stale backup-battery memory holding old settings across power cycles without the user realising.
- Wrong timezone set for the device/home
- Device offline (can't sync time/cloud)
- Power outage reset the plug
- Firmware out of date
- Sunrise/sunset location not set
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
