How to Fix Phyn Device Offline During ISP Outages Recovery
- Modem/router got a new IP/state after the outage
- Phyn's reconnect timed out during the outage
- 2.4GHz radio state after modem recovery
Problem Description
Your Phyn device stays offline after your internet service was restored following an ISP outage. The device may need time to auto-reconnect, the router may have stale network state, WiFi settings may have changed during the outage, or the device may need a forced reconnection or factory reset.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
A Phyn that stays offline after an ISP outage recovers is stuck in a stale connection state — during the outage its reconnect attempts timed out, and when service returned the network may have come back with a different IP or gateway, so the Phyn doesn't rejoin on its own. Other devices reconnect more aggressively; the Phyn sometimes needs a nudge.
First confirm the internet is fully restored, then restart the router/modem and, once they're fully up, power-cycle the Phyn to force a fresh reconnect. Reserving a DHCP IP prevents the addressing mismatch that causes this, and strong 2.4GHz signal plus stable DNS/gateway help it recover cleanly. If it still won't reconnect, re-provision its WiFi in the app.
Symptoms
- Phyn offline after an ISP outage
- Stays offline after internet returns
- Other devices reconnect, Phyn doesn't
- No data since the outage
- Won't come back after service restored
- Offline post-outage until reset
- Reconnect fails after WAN recovery
- Stuck offline
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Modem/router got a new IP/state after the outage
- Phyn's reconnect timed out during the outage
- 2.4GHz radio state after modem recovery
- DHCP re-assignment
- DNS/gateway change
- Weak signal masking recovery
- Firmware reconnect issue
- Router needs a restart
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not assume internet restoration means all IoT devices recovered automatically.

Step-by-Step Solution
Wait for the Phyn to auto-reconnect after internet returns
After an ISP outage: your router reconnects to the internet, but downstream devices reconnect at their own pace. The Phyn may take 10-20 minutes to detect that internet is available again and re-establish its cloud connection. Check the Phyn app after 20 minutes. If the device shows 'Online' with current data: it reconnected automatically. During the outage: the Phyn continues monitoring locally and will auto-shutoff water if it detects a catastrophic leak, even without internet.
Restart the router to clear any stale network state
Some routers retain stale DHCP leases or ARP cache entries from before the outage, which can prevent devices from reconnecting cleanly. Restart the router: unplug power for 30 seconds, plug back in. Wait for all WiFi networks to come back online (2-3 minutes). The Phyn should reconnect automatically within 10 minutes of WiFi becoming available. If the router was replaced by the ISP during the outage: you need to re-setup WiFi on the Phyn with the new SSID/password.
Press the Phyn device button to force reconnection
If the Phyn does not auto-reconnect after 20 minutes: walk to the device and press the small button on the front face of the Phyn (below the LED indicator). This forces the device to wake up, scan for WiFi, and attempt to connect. Watch the LED: flashing blue = connecting, solid blue = connected successfully, flashing red = connection failed. If flashing red: the WiFi network may have changed (new SSID or password from the ISP). Check your WiFi settings and update the Phyn's WiFi connection if needed.
Check if your public IP changed during the outage
Some ISPs assign a new public IP after an outage. This does not directly affect the Phyn (it uses outbound connections to the cloud), but if you have strict firewall rules or MAC-based access controls on your router: the Phyn may be blocked. Check your router's connected devices list: is the Phyn listed? If not: the router may be filtering it. Temporarily disable MAC filtering to test. If the Phyn connects: add its MAC address to the allowed list.
Factory reset if the device will not reconnect
If the Phyn stays offline despite router restart, button press, and correct WiFi settings: factory reset the device. For the Phyn Plus: press and hold the button for 15-20 seconds until rapid LED flashing. Then re-setup through the Phyn app. This re-registers the device with the cloud and establishes a fresh WiFi connection. After setup: the device should begin reporting data within 5 minutes. Any custom settings (leak sensitivity, auto-shutoff preferences) need to be reconfigured after a factory reset.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
This usually happens right after a router reboot or ISP change — the device rejoins the network but drops its cloud session silently.
Critical monitoring devices should be included in outage recovery checklist.
Most WiFi drop-offs happen right after a router reboot or ISP swap — the device reconnects to the network but silently loses its cloud registration.
- Modem/router got a new IP/state after the outage
- Phyn's reconnect timed out during the outage
- 2.4GHz radio state after modem recovery
- DHCP re-assignment
- DNS/gateway change
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
