How to Fix Phyn Home Setup Missing Device in App
- Device not in pairing/setup mode
- Bluetooth/location permission off for the app
- Phone not near the device
Problem Description
During Phyn home setup, the app does not show your Phyn device in the device discovery list — the "Add Device" screen finds nothing. The device must be powered and in pairing mode, your phone's Bluetooth must be enabled, you must be within close range, and your Phyn account must have a home configured.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
When the Phyn app doesn't show your device during home setup, the app can't discover it — usually because the device isn't in setup mode, the app lacks Bluetooth/location permission (needed to find it), or the phone isn't close enough. A device still tied to a previous account also won't appear.
Put the Phyn in pairing/setup mode, grant the app Bluetooth and location permissions, and keep the phone right next to the device, confirming it's powered and booted. If it was set up before, remove it from the old account first. Update the app, reduce interference, and restart both the device and app before retrying. With permissions granted and the device in setup mode nearby, it shows up to add.

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Device not in pairing/setup mode
- Bluetooth/location permission off for the app
- Phone not near the device
- Device not powered/booted
- Already added to another account
- App out of date
- Interference during discovery
- Device on a different network
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not factory reset first for visibility issues; confirm account context first.
Tools & Requirements
Step-by-Step Solution
Check that the device is powered on and in pairing mode
The Phyn device must be powered and broadcasting its pairing signal for the app to discover it. For the Phyn Plus: verify the breaker is on and the device's LED is active (any color). For Phyn Smart Water Sensors: insert fresh batteries. To enter pairing mode: press and hold the device button for 5 seconds until the LED starts a slow blue pulse. If the LED does not light at all: the device has no power — check the outlet, breaker, or batteries.
Enable Bluetooth on your phone
Phyn uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for initial device discovery during setup. If Bluetooth is off on your phone: the app cannot find the device. On iOS: Settings > Bluetooth > On. Also check: Settings > Privacy > Bluetooth > Phyn > allow access. On Android: Settings > Bluetooth > On. Some Android versions require Location Services to be enabled for Bluetooth device scanning — turn on Location if prompted.
Stand close to the device during discovery
BLE has a limited range, especially through walls and pipes. Stand within 5 feet of the Phyn device when tapping 'Add Device' in the app. If the device is installed in a basement or utility closet: the BLE signal may not reach through the floor or walls. Walk to the device's physical location. If the device still does not appear in the app's device list after 30 seconds of scanning: press the device button again to restart the pairing broadcast.
Check your Phyn account and home setup
In the Phyn app: make sure you are logged into the correct account and the home is created. Go to Settings > Home. If no home is set up: create one first (enter your address). Then try Add Device. If you were invited to someone else's Phyn home: you need to accept the invitation before devices are visible. Check your email for a Phyn invitation link. Some Phyn accounts are limited to one home — if you have devices at a different address, switch homes in the app.
Reinstall the app and retry
If the app's device scanner does not find anything despite the device being in pairing mode and Bluetooth enabled: the app may have a cached state preventing discovery. Delete the Phyn app, restart your phone, reinstall from the App Store/Play Store. Log in and try Add Device again. Fresh installs reset the Bluetooth scanning state and clear any cached device lists that might interfere with discovery.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
Multi-home accounts need clear naming to avoid device association mistakes.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
- Device not in pairing/setup mode
- Bluetooth/location permission off for the app
- Phone not near the device
- Device not powered/booted
- Already added to another account
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
