How to Fix Phyn Notifications Not Sent to Second User
- Second user not properly added to the home
- Second user lacks their own Phyn account
- Notifications disabled on the second user's phone
Problem Description
A second user added to the Phyn home does not receive push notifications for leak alerts, shutoff events, or pressure warnings. The second user must accept the home invitation, enable notifications in both the Phyn app and phone settings, have the correct member permissions, and have a valid push notification token registered.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
A second user not getting Phyn notifications almost always comes down to their setup, not the device: each additional user needs their own Phyn account, needs to be added to the shared home with a role that receives alerts, and needs notifications enabled on their own phone. Phyn alerts each user's device independently.
Confirm the second person is added to the home (with a permission level that gets alerts) and is signed into their own Phyn account, then have them enable notifications for the Phyn app in their phone settings, turn on the alert types in the app, and exempt it from any Do Not Disturb. Update the app on their device. Each user manages their own notification path, so all of these must be set on their phone too.
Symptoms
- Second user gets no notifications
- Added user isn't alerted
- Only the primary user gets alerts
- Second user missing leak alerts
- No notifications for a shared user
- Second account not receiving pushes
- Family member not alerted
- Notifications only on one phone
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Second user not properly added to the home
- Second user lacks their own Phyn account
- Notifications disabled on the second user's phone
- Alert types off in the second user's app
- Do Not Disturb on the second phone
- Permission level limiting alerts
- App not updated on the second device
- Not logged into the shared home
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not assume account sharing alone enables identical alert delivery.
Tools & Requirements
Step-by-Step Solution
Verify the second user was properly invited to the Phyn home
The primary account holder must invite additional users. In the Phyn app: Settings > Home Members > Invite Member. Enter the second user's email. They receive an email invitation with a link to join the Phyn home. If the invitation was not sent: re-send it. If the second user did not click the link in the email: they are not connected to the home. Check: does the second user see the Phyn device in their app? If not: the invitation was not accepted. The second user must also have the Phyn app installed and be logged into their own Phyn account.
Enable notifications on the second user's device
Each user must enable notifications independently. On the second user's phone: open the Phyn app > Settings > Notifications > enable all alert types (Leak, Shutoff, Pressure). Also check phone-level permissions: iOS Settings > Notifications > Phyn > allow. Android Settings > Apps > Phyn > Notifications > enable. Each user's notification settings are separate — the primary account holder's settings do not apply to other users.
Check that the second user has the latest app version
Older Phyn app versions may have notification bugs for secondary users. Both users should update to the latest version from the App Store/Play Store. After updating: the second user should log out and back in to refresh their account's push notification token. If the second user was using a very old app version: they may need to re-accept the home invitation after updating.
Verify the second user's role and permissions
Some Phyn home roles have limited capabilities. The 'Owner' has full control; 'Members' may have restricted access depending on how the Phyn home is configured. If the second user is a 'Member' without notification permissions: they do not receive alerts. The owner can check and modify member permissions in Settings > Home Members > tap the member's name. Grant full notification permissions to users who need leak alerts.
Test notifications for the second user
In the Phyn app on the second user's phone: manually trigger a test. Close the valve from the app (Shut Off) — does the second user get a push notification about the shutoff? If yes: notifications work, and the issue was specific to a past event type. If no notification: the push token is not registered. Have the second user delete and reinstall the app, log in, and accept the home invitation again. This registers a fresh push token with the Phyn notification service.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
Notification delays almost always return after a major iOS or Android update — background app refresh gets reset to restricted on every major OS version.
Critical alerts should be tested on all intended recipient devices.
Notification delays over 2 minutes are almost never the device's fault — background app restrictions quietly re-enable themselves after every OS update.
- Second user not properly added to the home
- Second user lacks their own Phyn account
- Notifications disabled on the second user's phone
- Alert types off in the second user's app
- Do Not Disturb on the second phone
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
