- Low or no water flow, pressure switch open
- High-limit switch tripped
- Dirty or failed igniter
Problem Description
The Hayward Universal H-Series gas pool heater does not ignite when the thermostat calls for heat. The heater may click (igniter firing) without lighting, show error codes on the display, or simply not respond at all. Common causes include insufficient water flow, gas supply issues, a dirty or failed igniter, or safety switches tripping.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
A Hayward heater that will not ignite is usually a water-flow or pressure-switch problem, a dirty igniter or flame sensor, or a gas-supply fault, and the display error code points the way. In real installs low flow from a dirty filter trips the pressure switch and blocks ignition.
Read the code, confirm flow and gas, and clean the igniter before replacing the control board.
Symptoms
- Heater will not ignite or fire
- Display shows an error code
- Clicks but no flame
- Fires then locks out
- No heat despite the pump running
- Ignition lockout
- Intermittent firing
- No response from the heater
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Low or no water flow, pressure switch open
- High-limit switch tripped
- Dirty or failed igniter
- Gas supply or pressure fault
- Control board or relay fault
- Blocked or dirty flame sensor
- Closed gas valve
- Airflow or venting problem
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Step-by-Step Solution
Check the heater display for error codes
The H-Series display panel on the front shows diagnostic codes when a fault prevents ignition. Common codes: IF (ignition failure — gas is not reaching the burner or igniter is not sparking), FS (flow switch open — not enough water flow), HLS (high limit switch tripped — water too hot or restricted flow), AFS (air flow switch — blocked exhaust). Write down the code and refer to the troubleshooting table on page 25 of the H-Series manual. The code tells you exactly which safety system is blocking ignition.
Verify water flow through the heater
The heater will not fire unless the internal flow switch detects adequate water flow. The pump must be running and all valves between the pump, filter, and heater must be open. Check the filter pressure gauge — if pressure is high (above 25 PSI on most systems), the filter is dirty and restricting flow through the heater. Clean or backwash the filter. Also check that the bypass valve on the heater plumbing (if installed) is not fully open — a bypass valve diverts water around the heater, reducing flow through it.
Confirm gas supply is reaching the heater
Check that the gas shutoff valve on the supply pipe to the heater is fully open (handle parallel to the pipe = open). If you smell gas near the heater but it will not ignite, the gas is reaching the burner tray but the igniter is not sparking. If you do not smell gas and the heater clicks but does not light, the gas valve inside the heater may not be opening — this is controlled by the control board and requires the flow switch and all safety switches to be closed. Verify propane tanks are not empty if using LP gas.
Inspect and clean the igniter
Turn off the heater and the gas supply. Remove the front access panel (two screws on the H-Series). The igniter is a small ceramic rod positioned near the burner tray — it produces a spark to light the gas. Clean the igniter tip with fine sandpaper (400 grit) or a soft wire brush to remove carbon buildup. Check the igniter wire connection at the control board — it should be firmly seated. If the igniter is cracked or the ceramic is broken, it needs replacement. Hayward igniter part number is HAXIGN1931 for the H-Series.
Check the high limit and pressure switches
The H-Series has two safety switches that prevent ignition if tripped: the high limit switch (a red reset button on the header assembly inside the heater) and the pressure switch (mounted on the water header). If the high limit switch tripped, press the red reset button firmly until it clicks. If it trips again immediately after the heater fires, there is a water flow restriction or the thermostat is set too high. The pressure switch should show continuity when the pump is running — if it does not, the switch is faulty or water flow is too low.
Test the control board for power and relay function
If the heater display is blank or unresponsive, check the power supply. The H-Series runs on 120V AC — verify the breaker is on and the outlet is live. Inside the heater, check the 3-amp fuse on the control board (a small glass fuse visible on the board face). If the fuse is blown, replace it with the same rating. If the fuse blows again immediately, the control board has a short and needs replacement. The H-Series control board part number is HAXCPA0003 (check your specific model for exact compatibility).
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
The Hayward Universal H-Series installation and operation manual is at https://www.hayward-pool.com/support/product-manuals — it includes all error codes, wiring diagrams, and igniter replacement procedures. Gas heater work involving the gas valve, gas piping, or heat exchanger should be done by a licensed pool heater technician. The igniter, flow switch, and high limit reset are safe DIY tasks. If you smell gas strongly, shut off the gas supply and call your gas company before troubleshooting.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
- Low or no water flow, pressure switch open
- High-limit switch tripped
- Dirty or failed igniter
- Gas supply or pressure fault
- Control board or relay fault
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
