Your Ecobee SmartSensor will not pair with the main thermostat or shows as disconnected after previously working. The thermostat cannot find the sensor during the pairing process or the sensor shows offline in the Ecobee app. SmartSensors use a proprietary 915MHz radio for communication and range is significantly reduced through multiple walls or floors of a typical home.

Step-by-Step Solution
Replace SmartSensor Battery
The Ecobee SmartSensor uses a CR2032 coin cell battery. When the battery drops below a threshold the sensor reduces its transmission frequency and power which causes it to appear offline even when the LED still functions. Remove the sensor back cover and replace the CR2032 with a fresh one. After replacement press the sensor button once to confirm operation. The thermostat should detect the sensor within 5 minutes without any additional steps.
Bring Sensor Close to Thermostat for Pairing
During initial pairing hold the SmartSensor within 1 metre of the thermostat. Go to the thermostat menu then Sensors then Add Sensor. Press the button on the SmartSensor once to activate pairing mode. The thermostat will detect the sensor within 60 seconds. After successful pairing you can move the sensor to its final location. Go to the Ecobee thermostat main menu then Settings then About and note the firmware version. Open the Ecobee app on your phone and check if an update is available for the thermostat. Install any pending firmware update. Some firmware versions have improved SmartSensor pairing reliability and reconnection behavior after brief signal losses. After updating retry the sensor pairing process with the sensor close to the thermostat.
