Problem Description

Your Ecobee SmartSensor shows offline in the app and on the thermostat. The sensor temperature is not being read and occupancy detection is not working. This means rooms with offline sensors are not included in temperature averaging or comfort profiles, causing uneven heating and cooling.

Symptoms

  • Sensor shows offline in app
  • Temperature reading missing
  • Occupancy detection not working
  • Sensor worked then went offline
  • Multiple sensors offline at once
  • Sensor blinking red LED

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Sensor battery dead or low
  • Sensor too far from thermostat
  • Radio interference blocking signal
  • Sensor fell out of holder
  • Thermostat radio module issue
  • Sensor needs re-pairing

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

SmartSensors do not connect to WiFi. They use a proprietary radio to communicate with the thermostat. Moving your router does not affect sensor connectivity only the thermostat needs WiFi.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check Sensor LED

Pull the sensor out of its holder and look for the LED on the back. Press and hold the button for 5 seconds. A blinking green light means battery is good. Blinking red or no light means battery needs replacement. The sensor uses one CR2032 coin cell battery.

2

Replace the Battery

Slide the battery door off the back of the sensor. Remove the old CR2032 and insert a new one positive side up. Replace the door. Press the sensor button until LED blinks green. The sensor should reconnect within 15 minutes. Battery life is approximately 18-24 months.

3

Check Distance from Thermostat

SmartSensors communicate directly with the thermostat using 915MHz radio not WiFi. Range is approximately 45 feet through walls. If your sensor is in a distant room or separated by many walls, floors, or large appliances signal may not reach. Move the sensor closer temporarily to test.

4

Re-pair the Sensor

If the sensor has battery and is in range but still offline try re-pairing. On the thermostat go to Main Menu, Sensors, Add Sensor. Pull the tab on the sensor or press the button to put it in pairing mode. Follow the prompts to complete pairing. The sensor LED will blink then go solid briefly when paired.

5

Restart the Thermostat

A software glitch on the thermostat can prevent sensor communication. Go to Main Menu, Settings, Reset, Restart Equipment. The thermostat will reboot. Wait 5 minutes after restart for all sensors to reconnect. Check sensor status in the app and on thermostat after reboot.

Quick Solutions

Replace sensor battery
Move sensor closer to thermostat
Re-pair sensor to thermostat
Check for radio interference
Restart the thermostat
Check sensor LED status

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

This usually happens right after a router reboot or ISP change — the device rejoins the network but drops its cloud session silently.

Pro Tip

Place sensors where people actually spend time sitting. Motion detection range is about 15 feet. A sensor in an unused corner will not detect occupancy accurately.

Real-World Insight

Most WiFi drop-offs happen right after a router reboot or ISP swap — the device reconnects to the network but silently loses its cloud registration.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Sensor battery dead or low
  • Sensor too far from thermostat
  • Radio interference blocking signal
  • Sensor fell out of holder
  • Thermostat radio module issue
